Chris Martin

He deserves his own thread.Signed as a fee transfer by Nigel Clough, he came with a โ€œbad boy" reputation, banned from more pubs in Norwich than our own Anglian. We saw no sign of this behaviour. Along with Richard Keogh he was a constant figure at the club while around them players and managers changed with alarming regularity. Like Keogh he has polarised opinion: either they are the reason why we have consistently challenged at the top end of the Championship for many years or else they are the reason we never got over the line.

Technically an excellent player. Very good touch, great awareness of those around him. A good finisher with both feet and a useful player in his own box defending set pieces. But slow, and in need of players around him to function. Unable to run the channels or to take on and beat a defender with speed and skill. Prone to falling over with either positive or negative result depending on the sympathy of the referee.

Surely a great success overall. Maybe he saved his greatest moment until the end: the bundling in of the ball off the back of his shoulder that completely derailed Forestโ€™s season.

Thank you Vidal for your excellent post. As I’m sure you all know I’m a big fan of Martin and was hoping he would stay with us for a little longer. I would rather wait till we have a better player to replace him, as we know we buy some rubbish like Blackman and Camara to name two.

I’m watching the cup final and have just seen an assist from Giroud which was Martinesque. We will miss him this season and wish it was Lawrence leaving instead of Chris.

Good luck and thank you Chris Martin, you will probably go to Leeds as you are ten times the player Bamford is!

Well said, VC.

All I can say in response to Vidal's thread is that whenever I think back to my favourite DCFC moments over the past 7 to 8 seasons, CM is consistently involved.
Notably in some best goals, assists and general play that we have seen, all coming from an uncommonly intelligent footballer.
He's not the calibre of player who arrives at Derby very often and certainly not one who will be easily replaced, as I suspect we shall find, in the coming months.

FYI, I have not, as yet, been banned from any pubs in the locality, although it was a prime reason for coming here in the first place.

Is Anthony Taylor on the Arsenal payroll?

I wondered that too.

We will survive the loss of Martin just as we survived the loss of Hughes and Hendrick, we will survive the loss of Keogh. Remember we lose all our players eventually. It's up to the management to replace them. Problem is over the past few years our ability to sign decent players seems to have declined. When you look at the millions wasted on the likes of Butterfield, Johnson, Camara, Blackman, Anya and Josefzoon it makes you want to cry.
Step up the academy, zigger zagger, zigger zagger Hector-Ingram.

I’m at a bit of a loss to understand why he hasn’t signed.
He’’s probably got a two year option elsewhere. Probably somewhere commutable, Birmingham, Sheff Wed perhaps.

We either haven't offered enough money or contract that is too short. I can understand why that might be. We are basically back to the early seasons of Nigel Clough where we were desperate to reduce the wage bill.

One of them is the modern equivalent of a "Derek Hales"

But that list is half a team.

Never mind, Sam Rush is happy in his retirement.

Have a horrible feeling that Bellyache might be the new Derek Hales. Coincidentally both were a success at Charlton.

It really is hard to appreciate today the effect of signing Hales had on the club. Other players who have had a devastating effect on the club are Ravenelli and Clod but none changed us so much that we went from big players in the top league to also rans overnight. The money wasted on Hales meant we weren't able to improve what was an aging team and accelerated our decline.

I agree about both players. Hales was awful as was that donkey Bobby Campbell.

For some reason I dislike Bellyache, I think it was his comments about how he wanted to get to the premiership and if Derby didn't get there he would move. I think it's lost on him if we want to get promoted we need better than him. We don't even know whether he is a centre half or a midfielder, maybe he can play in goal. £8/10 million is a hell of a lot for a player like him. No wonder we are bust.

Derby have the unenviable tag of "Man Utd of the Championship" when it comes to buying players, their prices seem to miraculously double.

No beach time for me. Training relentlessly and ready to go. Whatever league we may be in.
