GOAT Goalie Retires

Iker Casillas has announced his retirement from the game.

Despite being undersized and strangely not rated in the same way as someone like Buffon, he’s the best goalie I’ve ever seen.

His resumé speaks for itself.

I used to watch Madrid a lot and between 2004-2008 he was their best player. Youngest goalie to win a UCL, captained his National Team to 3 major titles and didn’t concede a single goal in any of the KO games at those tournaments. The acrobatics, the footwork, the ‘killer will’ to win.

Where does he rank among the best in your book?

Good shot stopper, good leader, but wouldnt be high up on my list, certainly not top 5, maybe not top 10. Top keeper though.

He is no Lev Yashin

Joking aside lads this is liquid just on the wum. He will be back on soon saying how much of a clutch player Casillas is and that he has won a couple of chips and is the apex goalie of his generation

The GOAT? Seriously?

Good leader, good on the ball and a good shot stopper. Thought he often positioned himself poorly and had obvious deficiencies due to his height.

"Good on the ball"? Wtf is that supposed to mean?

Certainly of the best one-on-one keepers is probably a fair appraisal. That Robben moment in the WC final was all Casillas, just as another that I think perhaps Robben or Sneijder put wide in the same game, all down to Casillas' closing down of angles and the striker's knowledge that the finish had to be inch perfect.

I think the only guy who regularly got the better of him 1-on-1 was Messi, which is hardly a stick to beat Casillas with.

Put the same goalie in the Real and Spain teams of the early 90s and he'd be a footnote.

Debatable, especially considering that Barcelona won two of their four consecutive league titles in that spell thanks to Madrid slipping up on the final day, and that losing at least one of those matches was definitely down to a huge goalkeeping balls-up.

There's actually quite a big likelihood that a prime Casillas might have made all the difference back then, and, as a knock-on effect we might not even speak of Cruyff's legacy as we do today. Who knows.

I really do think he’s the best keeper I’ve seen (in his prime).

Certainly not the Goat but was an outstanding keeper for many years.
