Premier League scraps 5 sub law.

Premier league clubs have overwhelmingly decided not to continue with the recent law amendment that allowed teams to make 5 substitutions in a match. From the start of next season the league will revert to 3 subs from a bench of 7.

The clubs also voted unanimously to implement FIFA's VAR protocols. This means that refs will use the pitchside monitor more frequently and thay VAR will be used to check if goalies move off the line for penalties. It also means a confirmation that offside will continue to be applied in a 0 tolerance manner. FIFA are exploring changes to offside to give more leeway to attacjers.

Dont understand why it was even up for debate. It was introduced to help finish the final few games off nothing more.

FIFA have extended it to end of next season, so it was up for debate for the individual leagues.

great, it favours certain teams

Didnt mind it myself, it benefitted every club with guarding against injuries and fatigue, it also meant homegrown youth was more likely to get some game time in the prem.

Sure City had a huge advantage over the rest of the top 6 as the top 6 had over the rest of the league but i still think the positives outweighed the negatives.

I would like to see a 4th and 5th sub allowed if they are academy players. This might see some better development of a clubs youth giving opportunity at the highest level where very few get a real chance.

A fair shout, although depending how you define academy could still give some clubs a ?unfair advantage

You could argue Brighton already have a ?unfair advantage

There was actually a pretty interesting take on that in the paper some days ago:

https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2020/jul/29/football-five-substitutes-rule-does-not-benefit-the-big-clubs-and-here-is-why

I think there are gaps in the reasoning, because smaller teams might also use more subs due to worse conditioning, if they have to shake things up to come from behind, are desperate for fresh legs to help protect a result, or simply want to run down the clock, but it's still good to look at things from a fresh perspective.
