I wrote an article about Jose and his wide reaching contacts and how he could use it to attract certain calibre of players, who are not at the prime of their career but nonetheless, have the know-how to win big games and trophies.
I was really hopeful this could be the case.
However, we were linked with Mertens, who has been a superb player for years and yet he turned us down. Even with his so called relationship with Jose.
It made think again if we could really attract these type of players, who even at the latter stages of their lives have options to go to a few clubs, so why would they choose us?
Put it this way. If you were one of them, and you were approached by a club that was a top 4 cert in the league, that played for the title every year and that played in CL finals, but now have sacked the manager and were struggling to get to the 6th position, would you come to Spurs?
Probably not.
I think the most prominent word Jose has uttered so far is the "pragmatic" word.
The way we played against Leicester, where we just sat back and let them have it at home. We won it. That's his approach.
Horses for courses. Adapt the tactics to the opposition.
Jose will be "pragmatic" in the market too. He won't be flamboyant. He can't be.
Not with the budget, the wage structure that we have and right now the ambitions of the club which is one to win a domestic trophy.
I do get it though. I do feel why some fans feel that Jose will achieve more with this situation.
I hope he does. I hope we don't just do "pragmatic".
In his reign at Spurs, Jose has gone from the "Special" one to the "Pragmatic" one.
It sure promises to be one damn arduous transfer window, followed by one hell of a long season.

But generally speaking it does seem that Spurs mostly buy players at that medium level - not cheap but also not top drawer.
People criticise Poch for his transfer record but when you look at it from a wages perspective, you can start to appreciate why he had a lower hit rate imo.
