PS5 controller

Next gen is going to be quite a leap, The PS5 seems to be packing some impressive tech. But there is more to gaming than pixels and resolution.

Sony are always looking for unique ways to enhance the gaming experience, and one way they are doing that is with haptic feedback.

Which is basically giving you some kind of sensory feedback through the controller. rumble is an obvious example, but this controller is taking it up a notch, and is impressing a lot of developers.

well lets just hope the analog stick is a bit more robust than suddenly pinging you hard left while you're in a middle of a bloomin' shoot-out!

Problem has always been though Amiga is 3rd parties don't use it and even first parties don't bother after a while. The touch pad on 4 is great but no one uses it. The Vita unfortunately is an entire advert for "cool" hardware that was never used, and then the most recent example is the switch - overly complicated controls that no developer fully utilised. I hope I am wrong and as long as the haptic feedback is easy to implement it should be fun, just a shame in my opinion they just didn't dump the touch pad totally, but hopefully this signifies that backwards compatibility will be important to them this time round. Would have loved to have seen a Dreamcastesque LCD screen in the middle (battery life aside) and glad it's got a bigger battery though I never understood this arguement as it's about 8ish hours, and honest I don't know people who constantly play for 8 hours plus or aren't near a socket/their PS4 to charge the thing - would have loved to have seen how these people would have done in the early days when you maybe had a 2 foot cable that had to be plugged in!

Hi Simon, I was wondering if you were still knocking around.

I think it is important to try to move forward, and I'm glad Sony is not simply keeping the old controller (which is not compatible with PS5 games) although you can play PS4 games with it.

As for who uses these features, it is an option. I have seen some great uses of the touchpad, but the most obvious use has been using it as a map button. which is utilised a lot.

But these new features are a bit like rumble, and add real feedback to the gamer. This is something I'm sure will see a lot of use (like rumble) as I'm guessing should be easy to implement, and add a lot to what the developer is trying to achieve.

Time will tell, but with Sony's first party, there will be no shortage of games to look forward to.

Oh as for the LCD screen, Sony actually considered it for the PS4, But it was decided it would be too distracting and they wanted people looking at the TV.

Dreamcastesque

That controller was ahead of its time.

I still think my Dreamcast is kicking around at my folks place. That was a great and underrated console in my opinion. The internet was a little sketchy but it gave us some great games. The first Sonic was graphically beautiful and let’s not forget Shenmue.

Sorry Amiga m8 but the touch pad is a waste of real estate. I concur haptic feed bad should be nice....but like I pointed out Switch pretty much has that and no one uses so much so I'm certain they pulled 3d rumble from the lite. I am glad they are at least taking these chances, and yes haptic should be good as long as 3rd parties can easily implement it, it should be a nice feature......but also unfortunately Sony has a track record to just dump these things cold.

I think we will agree to disagree on this one Simon. These features are here to stay, and great additions.

I think gamer's are really going to appreciate the effort Sony have put into next gen, and not just in the controller.
