Greaves' goal-record is the best of any English player since Pre-WW2. For club and country he banged them in, and even Shearer, Rooney etc. don't have the same type of goal tally.

But Rooney won 5 PLs and 1 UCL and Greaves never won either.

Obviously if Greaves had played a key role during the World Cup run that would supersede everything else but he didn't.

If Greaves had played a major role in the World Cup win and won a league title or European Cup, he'd be the best British player ever. But that goes to Bobby Charlton atm imo (followed by Bale and Rooney).

Didn't Brian Clough have a better goal per game than Greaves!? Admittedly scored most of his from lower div though.

Greaves technically won a Serie A title

Tbf irrelevant that Greaves didn't win loads and if anything scoring so regularly for average teams shows how good he was. If he was at say manu during 1960s then he'd have scored many more

Top flight his record his the best ever pre war or post war. He really was a phenomental striker, and but for his problems would probably have played on longer, and scored another 100 goals or so. He returned at the top level remarkably young.

Not in the list, but Rooney > Kane. And Shearer probably.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I never understood the Rooney hype if I'm honest, he could do some magical stuff don't get me wrong buti don't think he was as good as some say.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Totally agree mate. No doubt he was a very good player and very successful playing in an excellent United team through most his career, but Kane is no doubt the better striker.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Exactly Don if he was as good as they say he would have ended up at Barcelona or Madrid.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If Kane was as good as you say then he would have ended up at Barcelona, Madrid, Man Utd...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He will.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Doubt he will leave the Prem.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think if we win nothing this year he will go to Spain or Italy.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
wouldn't blame him but he might get found out in the wrong team

Greavsie was only 30 when he left Spurs, just about peak age for any top level modern day striker. Remarkable he scored all of those goals, lots at a very young age. 200 league goals by the time he was 23.

Greaves definitely one of the best in his era but the 2 eras (Greaves era and the PL) are so far apart and different it's hard to compare them. It's bad enough having Lineker in this debate.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I agree cannot really compare Prem era with Greaves or Dean era. Prem era players have everything going for them.

Could you imagine Shearer or any modern day Prem player, playing with a ball that weighed a ton, playing on pitches ankle deep in mud with those heavy boots. Oh and getting some brutal on the field treatment from opposition defenders. See fella it work both ways.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Seeing your comment Sandy made me smile at a memory. My grandad used to play top division football and once described modern football to me as "fairies kicking a balloon in slippers".

He was half joking but there's a truth there - the game is so different today. He was insistent that the great players from his day would still be great players in the modern era though because whilst defending and goalkeeping has improved beyond recognition, the fitness, nutrition and conditioning today would compensate. Talent is talent, as he used to say.

100 per cent mate. Although I am not sure how an half time ciggie would go done now.

Although I have been watching football for a very, very long time, I would have loved to have watched football from the 1920s, 30s, 40s and before. It must have still been a great watch, with massive crowds in attendance.
