Messi pockets a penny every time his name is mentioned on the internet.

Players like Ronaldo and Maradona raise the effectiveness of those around. They do it whichever team they are in - club or national

Messi has always needed great team players around him to make him more effective. He's a one club player that relied on the likes of Xavi and Iniesta etc. And he is a relative failure in a poorish national man.

There is no shame, however, in being ONE of the best players to originate from a nation with a great footballing heritage. But he was never remotely the greatest.
