The Star System

Morning all

Last week at my current employer before venturing onto pastures new from next Tuesday, so procrastination has been the order of the day!

Like many of you, I was watching the CL final last night and noticed that Bayern only had four stars above their crest (having won five European titles before last night's triumph).

I looked into this and apparently they represent domestic milestones, as opposed to European successes. During 2004, the Deutsche FA equivalent decreed that commemorative stars would be awarded to teams that have won the domestic league three, five, and thereafter each multiple of ten.

Bayern have won the top flight 30 times, however, the star system only includes Bundesliga titles won since the formation of the league system in 1963. Given one of Bayern's triumphs occurred in 1932, this has been discounted from the star system, leaving them on 29 (so, a fifth star if they win it next year).

I'm not a fan of discounting a sections of a club's history due to a more significant passing of time, however, it does work well for a nice WUM:

If the EPL did the same (i.e. from the inception of the Premier League in 1992):

United - 3 stars;
Chelsea - 2 stars;
City - 1 star; and
Arsenal - 1 star.

All time (or, as it it SHOULD be done):

United - 4 stars;
Liverpool - 3 stars;
Arsenal 3 stars;
Chelsea - 2 stars;
City - 2 stars;
Everton - 2 stars;
Aston Villa - 2 stars;
Sunderland - 2 stars (surprised by this);
Newcastle - 1 star;
Sheffield Wednesday - 1 star;
Huddersfield - 1 star (also this);
Leeds - 1 star;
Blackburn - 1 star; and
Wolves - 1 star.

Teams I thought would have at least a star:

Spurs; Forrest.

Was it an extract from the literary classic “ Great United Myths of the 20th Century”?

One for each super yacht purchased by Sheikh Mansour?

Number of times Oasis played at Maine Road?

Maybe a neighbouring hotel is still awaiting their three star rating with the certificate being misdirected to City?

We may never know.
