LVG's wish list

Earlier in the season I remember LVG making noise about not getting the players he wanted. And how he felt utd as the biggest club in the world should be able to do so easily. At the time I remember saying we should all chill before criticising Ed Woodward especially without knowing who LVG wanted

https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/van-gaal-reveals-he-tried-to-sign-neymar-lewandowski-and-mane-at-/vmc7te9x546k1n3s7dbbq880i

He has now come out and said he wanted neymar (from barca), lewadosnki+muller (from bayern),ramos (from real), higuain (who cost 90 million), #football manager

mahrez, kante , mane, hummels were also on his wish list and depending on the timiing they could have been inspired signings imo

So now we know who he wanted, do we feel he was unrealistic or ed was incompetent to not have signed those players?

Not at all, but that’s sadly due to the fact LVG was past it when he joined us. That’s the thing with Klopp, not only have Liverpool recruited brilliantly, he has the ability to make players wanna die for him and be the best they can.

We should have got Mane, was interested the year before he went to Liverpool. Dreadful by United to not get him. Mahrez was too expense imo

Always blames the value on the market, and end up paying the same amount on mediocre players instead.

Lewan is probably the one never realistic, in the Fergie era he probably was though, while we got a over rated Kagawa, Bayern was getting Lewan.

Mahrez would have only been pricy after the season Leicester won the league by which point LVG had been sacked. Before that he’d done very little and would have been easy to but surely?

the truth is bayern have first dibs on any player playing in germany. The can gurantee domestic trophies and challenge for the UCL and offer stability in a way no other club in the world can. Not even SAF utd team

Wasn't really questioning Lewan tho. I agree in what you're saying. We got Van Persie instead of Lewan and was a great transfer at that time.

Not always, I reckon some players would prefer to test themselves in a stronger league or play for one of the 2 big Spanish clubs depending on their background. Bayern do have a very good set up though where they are able to pick the best domestically and are rarely challenged in the league because they’re some much stronger financially. They’ve very sensible too, knowing not to blow a load on a big name from abroad.

The other top leagues (with some exceptions) in Europe don't have an issue with selling to their rivals. Dortmund have sold a few players to Bayern for example. Pirlo has played for Inter, then Milan and then Juventus. The English game isn't the same and also a washed with money. No way another team in Europe pays £40m for Joelinton for example. It makes buying and selling players in the league and abroad a bit more difficult. Of course there are bargains out there but you have to look for it. The market is an issue as some still expect pre-covid prices for players. You also see some leagues sell players cheaper if they're moving to a team in the same league when the same players were linked to English teams for double the price sometimes.

Ramos - Unrealistic

Hummels - Doing very well with Dortmund

Kante was at Caen so maybe a big miss

Milner- Unrealistic

Neymar - Unrealistic

Mane - Had just signed for Saints in 2014

Mahrez - Had just signed for Leicester

Muller - Unrealistic

Lewandowski - Maybe we could have done this but going to Bayern may have been his preference.

Higuain - No thanks

i suspect lvg's memory is playing tricks with him, there is no particular reason why he personally would have been after kante or mahrez whilst at the club - the scouts may have been looking at them, but i doubt lvg was. and i like mahrez, and don't understand why we apparently never showed any interest in him, but he wouldn't be the first name to come to mind if i wanted a "pacy winger".

and if we were looking at kante whilst lvg was there, why did we then apparently only show an interest after jose joined, and he had already agreed to go to chelsea? we've signed plenty of players linked to us under one manager and signed under another - herrera, shaw, maguire etc.

so i'd take some of these names with a largeish pinch of salt, the same way i don't pay much attention to the sacked scout who tells you that he identified messi as a genius when he was 3 years old (the player, not the scout).

Yeah. LVG has been quite bitter about his time at United. Like a spurned ex.
