Messi

Has asked to leave Barca for free... Should we be all over this? I know his at the wrong end of the age spectrum but Messi to United would be massive!!!

The more I think about it, the less it would seem that buying Messi would fit into the strategies of either of the Manchester clubs. But particularly City. I struggle to think of transfers to City that haven't been at least aimed at providing long or at least medium-term footballing benefits. This has been United's strategy too since Solskjaer's arrival. Sancho is a much more coherent target than Messi in that respect. But you have to worry about the solidity of that principle under Ed 'it's like Disneyland for grownups' Woodward and the irresistible allure of marketing gold.

This is why I think it's a faint possibility with United. 100% agree that long term Sancho is strategically is a better fit for United BUT, I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be buzzing about seeing Messi play for United

MMMM - totally. If there's one ridiculous transfer it's worth abandoning your strategy for, this is it! And we have form in this area.

Where I slightly disagree with you is I'm not sure signing Messi fits City's M.O. and they have been quite consistent in sticking to signing players in positions they need who have their best years ahead of them. Also (while they have signed expensive flops) being fairly rigid about not spending more than they want to, including being willing to let players they do want go elsewhere if they're outbid. Once again, this could be a situation where you find the exception to the rule.

For me PSG looks the most likely destination. They have the cash, and they have been much more up for extravagant statement signings. Much more of a galatico policy than the way City's lavish spending has followed a long-term team construction strategy.

LFC: See above. Think he'd relish playing under Klopp, but financially out of their reach

.....

All of this is incorrect imo. I think at his age he would struggle to play under Klopp. I don’t think he is out of Liverpool’s price range at all.

All depends what happens with the termination clause in his contract. It could end up in court if Barca refuse to acknowledge it’s still valid.

Bartomeu loves a court case. He'll actually be hoping that Messi's lawyers try something

He could play in the Firmino role, no issue. He obviously doesn't work as hard but we don't play the high press much any more. Firmino is more about his movement when we have the ball which allows our wide players to benefit. The way Messi operates between the lines wouldn't be that different.

That’s if he’s still in a job.

All depends on his motivation doesn't it. If you look at the options he has:

City: Instantly in a side that will challenge for the PL and UCL and knows the manager well. Probably his most likely destination.

LFC: See above. Think he'd relish playing under Klopp, but financially out of their reach

Juve: Play alongside Ronaldo and help get them over that UCL hump. Though there's a fine line in a healthy and unhealthy competitive streak with the other GOAT. Finances as well. All things being equally Italy looks a perfect destination.

PSG: Reunited with Neymar, finance no object for them and would probably enjoy the challenge of getting them a CL title

United: Certainly and outside choice as of the teams listed are the most off the pace for challenging for major honours. However, Messi may enjoy the challenge of helping United get back to the top of the game. If he did it would end all doubt about who the GOAT. Ed will of course see dollar signs and from what we know of would love to pull that transfer off(obviously that is positive thinking my part). It would be a transfer that could suit United as well, if the Sancho deal is not possible this summer.

Of course this could all be politics and he stays at Barca
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If Messi isn't staying for Barca's rebuild then, at 33, I can't see him buying into united's
