Clearing the deadwood.

Much of the talk during the transfer window is about getting the right players in to improve the squad. However, something that has irritated me over the last few transfer windows, is our inability to move on our deadwood. There are too many players in the squad who offer very little, either through lack of quality or poor injury records (or both). I accept the difficulties of this, due to wage demands and Ed renewing the likes of Jones on brand new 4, 5 year contracts.

Assuming we obtain two more signings, a CB and a RW (not counting on Ed to deliver that) these are members of the squad we should be moving on.

GK: Romero & Grant
Defence: Jones, Smalling, Rojo and one of TFM/Dalot
Midfield: Pereira, Lingard & Mata

That is potentially 9 players we can move on, whilst maintaining at least 2 players for each position. The board must be thinking about (especially during COVID) the potential money that can be raised in transfer fees and savings in wages that can be made. It will also make it easier for Ole to manage the squad.

Surprised Jones hasn't been pushing for a transfer, although suppose we don't know what is going on behind closed doors.

I mean give us some credit..

Young, Sanchez, Mkhitaryan and Lukaku gone.
Rojo all but out.
Smalling has been on loan and will move off the back of that.

We’re getting there.

Fellaini too, lest we forget

Ole’s done a decent job getting rid, imho

that's what phil jones spends his time doing rather than pushing for a transfer.

i don't know him at all, but he must think he's won the lottery every time his salary hits his bank account.

Isn't it Jones' testimonial year this season, club legend.

Ah right, yeh, although he'd strike me as someone who wants to play football.

Apparently he's turned down the opportunity of a testimonial as he felt it wouldn't be right and not many people would turn up.

Felt a bit sorry for him when I'd read that.

I do feel for Phil Jones. His injuries really have blighted his career. I'm sure he doesn't want to be injured a lot and as frustrating as it is for us supporters it's much worse for him.

......

He strikes me that way too. But his body can not sustain physical sports.

I would expect him to be stretchered off playing tiddlywinks.

I don't think Phil Jones has ever been stretchered off.

I know he's gone off injured, but I don't recall him being injured enough to need the stretcher.

I think we'd all remember if he had, because he'd probably fall off the stretcher and injure himself some more.

The fact that Jones himself is too embarrassed to have a testimonial should get Ed the sack for giving him a new contract. Why the feck is he still here after this long
