Another good signing but still short ...

So, with yet another good signing with top class potential, we re all excited. People are talking about our master plan and how it's coming to shape, but is it really?

First, these signings allow us to play various systems equally well, and afford us the luxury of quality on the bench. We have three forwards who can play as wingers, we have attacking midfield options who can play in wide or central midfield and attacking areas. We have great versatility.

I understand that when a club has the chance to sign coveted players like Werner and Havertz, it must act fast or miss out - so well done Chelsea in that respect.

BUT - we are still short. We desperately need any top-ish goalkeeper. In my opinion, we need a really top centre back to rotate with Rudiger and Silva. And we are probably an all-round midfielder short - a powerhouse.

If all of our signings come to fruition, it will be an interesting few years at Chelsea. We've given up on signing the nearly men and seeing if they will work and are now investing in top talent once again. We also need to ship out players such as Cristensen, Zouma, Barkley and Bakayoko while they have a re-sale value.

Our squad is looking much better, exciting times ahead!

'We desperately need any top-ish goalkeeper.'

With how aggressive we've already been in this transfer window, who said we're not going to address that?
The speculation suggests a goalkeeper is very much on the cards as well.

Patently obviously that Frank is looking to replace Kepa and rightly so.
Doesn't exude any confidence to the defence and hasn't got one outstanding characteristic. Horrendous.

Patience is a virtue.

'we need a really top centre back to rotate with Rudiger and Silva.'

Rudi never has and never will be in the top CB category, looking the worst one at present.

Christensen, Silva, Zouma or Tomori and possibly Ampadu suffice as fluid rotational options for another season, behind a 'keeper that is commanding & can actually save shots and a midfield that isn't completely open (Kante & Ampadu being free of injuries, wouldn't go a miss).

I'm of the belief if those factors comes together, we'll be absolutely fine.

All CB's mentioned above will have to play their part, in rotation accordingly.
Schedule ridiculously compressed & congested, more than ever this season, taxing.

Some interesting points, but as for Kepa, I think he cost us 15 points last season - just by the law of averages. He might just be the most unlucky keeper ever!

As for midfield, who powers us if Kante isn't there. I'm not talking guile and technique, I'm talking power. We need power.

and in defence, Silva may help us, but we need Upamecano or a similar strong, quick, physical, DOMINANT centre back for years to come. I look forward to seeing Rudiger next to Silva but neither alone is going to be enough mid-long term.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Two way thing with the keeper and defence. Is it the keeper who doesn't give the defence any confidence or the awful defence that inviting unnecessary pressure on the keeper?

At present I'm erring on the side of the keeper because I honestly believe the defence last season was as bad as it's been for a long, long time!

I just think that by law of averages, he should have saved a lot of points. He has the lowest save percentage in Premier League history I heard onTV. Says it all in my opinion.

Yeah, but conversely if you have a defence who are constantly inviting shots at him, he's not going to have the best stats around anyway.

That said, I'm not a great believer in the modern trend of quoting stats to prove everything.

But we're talking about percentage. He saves very few shots. The keepers who have loads of shots fired at them have high save percentages. He faces third lowest number of shots but lets in highest percentage of goals.

As I say, maybe he's just unlucky.

His stats were poor under Sarri too. Our defence is bad but it also doesn’t account for why Kepa is so much worse compared to other ‘keepers who play with bad defences

I am not sure if Mendy is the answer to finding a world class keeper, but replacing Caballero with him is worth a try. I would like to think Cech has an eye for a keeper.

I am not bothered about not signing a GK or CB this window. Just like Liverpool, we can't get everyone we need in one window.

Maybe Mendy is not the answer but I think that an average keeper like Butland would have earned us more points last season. All keepers make errors, but most keepers make saves too!
