Castagne Left or Right?

I just posted this elsewhere but thought it worthy of another discussion.

Basically, after 1 good game on the right hand side we now all agree that Castagne is the new Maldini and 500 times better than Chilwell could ever wish to be. But we knew that anyway.

The question is, can he do it on a cold evening in Newcastle at left back???

When Pereira is back, will Castagne move to the left or will Brendan go crazy and try and fit them both on the right? Can Pereira be the answer to our winger issues ahead of Castagne with Fuchs and Justin covering the other side?

I think we all want to see a Pereira + Castagne full back situation but interested to see if others think it will happen?

Do we still need a left back or not? Iā€™m confused!

I seen speculation about Ricky P playing further up field and I’m dead against it. I simply believe that he’s one of the best players in the league at RB, but only mid table as a winger. Unless we change shape and he plays RWB.

The solution is still to buy a decent wide forward/winger. Maybe now it looks like we’re finally giving up on Gray that we could use him as a makeweight in any deal. But everyone knows we’ve needed a creative winger since Mahrez left.

I think it may be more of a case we need him there as we can’t find the level of talent we need ie they’ve got to be much much better than Gray. Of all the names linked only Trincao looked like that sort of level. I like McNeil but Barnes produced much better figures than him and they play the same position. Brooks could kick on but could equally be Gray with injuries. I think they may sign no one rather than the wrong one. Is so I expect we may see 2 centre backs come in and Benkovic go out on loan.

The most likely scenario is that Castagne will move to LB when Ricardo is fit. A 3-5-2 or variation of that with attacking full backs could benefit them both but would mean we lose a midfielder at a time when we don't even have three fit CBs.

I would at least like to see what a Ricardo-Castagne partnership would look like down the right hand side. Even if it was trialled in a cup match, I think it's a partnership that could work very well.

Justin looks better at LB than he does at RB but I'm still not sure if he is a first choice full back for a team trying to push for a European place, if that is the aim this season.

I don’t know why and maybe it’s because I’m not watching us live at the minute, but I sometimes struggle to work out what formation we’re playing.

I think we started as 4-2-3-1 yesterday, but this became more 4-1-4-1 in the second half after Maddison came on.

Praet seemed to be playing ahead of Tielemans and Mendy.

I think with our players we can play 4-2-3-1, 4-1-4-1, 3-5-2, or 3-4-3. I don’t mind Rodgers varying it but I’d really like to see ya find out starting formation at home and make it consistent. 4-2-3-1 is my least favourite because it can isolate Vardy and result in that first half against West Brom, the second half of last season or the whole of Puel’s reign šŸ˜‰

It’s not that I think this is the worst idea. Playing RP on the right of midfield is only a question of him being better than the other options: Perez, Gray, Albrighton, Barnes? He could well be.

My point is that we’d be moving a world class RB, to play in a position he’s not world class in, to plug a gap created by inferior players.

It would say more about our failed recruitment than it would about Ricardo’s ability to play there.

I agree with you Joby (obviously), but my only counter would be that Pereira was a winger come wing back and has played a lot of his career there.

He’s also better than the players you’ve listed.

That isn’t a counter.

Is this the start of an argument?

If so, come on guys - have you learned nothing from years of watching BlackStarr, True Blue and Nev going at it?

I want to see snide remarks, insults of intelligence and threats of dog poo through letterboxes.

I’d counter that he isn’t a World Class RB, he’s world class because of his attacking, he’s no better at defending than Chilwell was, players drop a shoulder and walk straight past him.

He does make up for that in a massive way in his attacking prowess, we’ve missed that awfully while he’s been injured, we’ve not missed his defending though.

That’s a better counter. He might well not be “world class”, which is something of a subjective measure anyway. You’d probably say in terms of PL right backs he’s in the top 3. Certainly the top 5.

Another analogy to this discussion: if N’didi played really well over the next few games at CB would you keep him there? Probably not as he’s in the top 3 CDMs in the Premier League.
