Angel Gomes Boavista Debut

Came across this video of Gomes' debut performance in a pre-season game against Tondela in the Portuguese PL and thought it might be of interest.

I have to say, it's an impressive debut. I'm struggling to understand why he couldn't have been loaned out by us, rather than purchased by Lille and then loaned out by them? A ridiculous situation to lose this kid on a free only to see him loaned out by his new club.

All the usual caveats about the standard of opposition/intensity of a pre-season apply, of course.

........

It pretty much justifies us getting rid of him. At His size he was never going to make it in the Prem. There is small then there is Gomes small.

A loan abroad might have led to us getting a decent fee for him though. Even £10m would justify our investment in his development.

We needed to start offloading players off our books. We were not ever going to play him.

Pretty sure he was also out of contract.

He didn’t want to stay. That’s the bottom line.

The club couldn’t guarantee him first team football, and Lille persuaded him that they could show him a path to their first team.

I don’t think it was a terrible result for Gomes or United, tbh.

I think he’ll still become a great little player; but I’m not sure he’ll be back playing PL football,

He made his competitive debut on Saturday in Boavista's 3-3 draw at Nacional and he assisted all 3 goals.

He left because we couldn't guarantee him what he wanted, first team football and I think he'd made up his mind to leave pretty early on during last season. Rightly or wrongly he maybe looked at the likes of Greenwood, Williams and Chong and maybe thought he should've been getting similar opportunities in line with those players.

What I'd like to know is did we ever discuss the possibility of a loan with him before last season because he made his first team debut at the end of the 16/17 season and then he spent 3 seasons after that playing mostly youth football which wouldn't have done him much good.

If not we should've looked into the possibility of loaning him to somewhere in Portugal, even the Segunda Liga in Spain or the 2. Bundesliga in Germany by the summer of 2018 at the latest. Somewhere somebody with his talents could better flourish.

He'll no doubt do well in Portugal and maybe even go on to succeed in France, I wouldn't be surprised. It's hard to tell how high a level he'll reach due to his size but he's got lots of talent so it might not be such a big factor and he's just turned 20 so he's still got plenty of time on his side.

I will definitely be following his career very closely.

Thanks TRS. Looks another excellent performance - he’s clearly comfortable at that level against seniors. Three very good assists and the second one was pure class! What deft touch.

I agree that his size at PL level might have been a problem but it’s interesting to see his technical skills, vision & intelligence more than compensating at senior level in Portugal.

I’ll also be keeping tabs on his progress as I think he’s a cracking player.
