This new handball rule

Pathetic and needs to be changed.

Can’t wait for Jose’s interview.

Dier had his arm in a natural airborne position with his back to play so you could easily argue the referees (var and on pitch) did not understand the new rule and lacking common sense.

"Common sense", unfortunately not common at all.

We are led by robots, and it does my nut.

It's a yoke I tell you, but to be fair 'we' basically asked for it:
-Some defenders started to abuse the ambigious handball rule we had in the 90s and earlier by making themselves big and jumping in front of shots/crosses. Especially smaller teams, so the big boys started to complain and campaign at FIFA/UEFA for a fix.

-We did not allow different refs to make mistakes or interpret the rules in the spirit of the game (unintentional differs per ref), although they are different people and mere human.

-Everyone and his/her mother more and more made fun of refs mistakes, including pundits/media. Image of refs went down the drain and the FA's decided they needed a quick fix and here we are ("are you not entertained?"

To be honest, I'm especially guilty of point 2 (different rules for different refs) and starting to see the true difficulties with solving this problem. Making rules more black and white has an unexpected butterfly effect.
The long term fix is putting way more money in training refs AND accepting they can be wrong, but that's has been a polarising opinion...

It would help if the refs showed a bit of courage in their convictions now and again. Not once, not even a single time, has a ref been asked to look at the screen and given a different verdict to the VAR official who asked them to have a look. Even when on several occasions they really should have stuck to their initial call

i think your post nails it imo

we either leave the rules in a way refs can use their own judgement. With every decision under the spotlight for the last decade, partly thanks to technology and pundits constantly needing something to moan about.
now we seem to have gone the other extreme by removing common sense and making key decisions only matter of fact

while i prefer common sense application of the law the lack of consistency is what has led us here

I was hoping to go into work and listen to all the non United moan about Man United getting a penalty after the final whistle - Turns out Everton and Newcastle are VARs biggest winners.

The handball rule needs to go back to basics.

Looking forward to the VAR fanboys telling us that Dier shouldn’t have his arm there.

True, but refs should have become accustomed to do that after the pilot phase, which basically was last year for the PL. Compared to other countries the guys monitoring the VAR are surprisingly incompetent (blatant mistakes even with all the footage and angles). It seems like they are more prone to cover for their mates both ways...

All this crap and they still "missed" the Sheff Utd "goal" v Villa.

The lot of them are pi55ing down the same straw, jobs for the boys and incompetent at that.

The one thing today beautifully clarifies is that a player’s arm can absolutely be away from your body without being part of any deliberate attempt to affect the ball, and that players should not just be told to keep their arms down.

Dier’s arm was moving around because he was moving around. It’s what happens and as I’ve said time and time again, if you actually watch footballers and watch their arms, you’ll see this is how the human body works.

The lawmakers have made a farce of defending.

Diet shouldn't have had his arm there. Rules are rules. It's a penalty. You don't like it , feck off!
