Random rumours

A couple of names linked to us in the red tops today, which I propose to discuss purely for the sake of variety.

Arkadiusz Milik - Poland's second best striker; a respectable but not mind-blowing record at Napoli (though the stats from his four years there would look better had his first two seasons there not been badly disrupted by cruciate ligament injuries). Though primarily a centre forward, he's left footed and flexible enough to play on the win, so theoretically could provide cover for Greenwood on the right and Martial in the centre (particularly when Ighalo goes). According to Wikipedia, he's a devoted United fan. Would be relatively cheap. It's a coherent enough option as a fallback to Sancho that I will give this story and high credibility rating of 3/10.

N'Golo Kante - we're leaky in defence, lack defensive structure in midfield when we play both Pogba and Fernandes, need to sort out a successor to Matic, and one of the world's finest defensive midfielders is available, because he doesn't really fit into Lampard's system at Chelsea. Welcome to Manchester United, N'Golo Kante! 0/10.

Any other stories I missed?

I’m sure I read that it was the fourth quarterly report that was to be discussed with shareholders today. There’s been a hold up due to covid and they’ve not been published yet. That could be causing the hold up with going big on Sancho.

just had a quick look and they do indeed seem to have a June YE, last issued report was the Q3, so the one due will be the Q4/FY one.

I'd love to see what is going on behind the scenes. Ole made some positive comments regarding transfers early in the window, now he seems to be backtracking.

The same happened last summer talking about bringing in a midfielder.

Don, yep I checked the website as well. I vaguely remember it being said there would be delays on the accounts due to covid. I’m not sure exactly how this all works, however, considering we should already be in a different financial year on our accounts now.

i haven't read these stories, but the idea of delaying the sancho transfer would have made a lot more sense if the intention was to shift it into a different fiscal year, than it would if the intention was simply to shift it into a different quarter of the same fiscal year.

ie not sure why it would make much difference whether he was signed in Q1 (today), or Q2 (thursday), of the 20/21 year.

I’d seen a few things mentioned about it. One was that the delay meant that United actually want to alter the dates of the fiscal year to keep in with the season ending (I don’t know if this is allowed). And another was that they want the board and shareholder conference (that is apparently today) before they commit to any big purchases. But I’m not really sure how much of this is even close to accurate.

ah, ok, that makes sense. companies are allowed to change their year-ends, and whilst i would have thought you'd actually want to make a major purchase before your conference call - because that is good news, no? - if they prefer not to talk about it i can see why they would wait.

cool, so sancho/telles/upamecano done later this week then, that should boost the club.

I know companies can change their year ends, but I don’t know if this is allowed in football given the ffp regulations.

Not sure how clubs are navigating these things given the delay to the season. Prize money that was awarded at the end of the season will obviously impact many club accounts.

We’ll just have to wait until 5th October to find out how Woodward facked up the transfer window.
