Handball Rule: Leeds vs City

Morning all and happy weekend!

Apologies if this has been discussed - I can’t see an article on it on the football page.

Watched MOTD last night and there was an incident in the Leeds vs Man City game in which the ball very clearly struck the somewhat outstretched hand of a Leeds player in the box.

Now, I want to be clear that I think the new interpretation of the rule is BS and I do not think that this incident - nor several others this season - should have resulted in a penalty being awarded to the opposition. However, where this interpretation has been applied, it needs to be applied consistently across the season. The commentator even said “I dare say that would have been given last weekend".

Was there any mention of this by the punditry after the highlights (fell asleep!). Has there been an internal discussion about the application of the rule by the authorities? As I say, I think it’s BS, but surely it can’t be considered equitable to amend a rule or the interpretation thereof during the course of the season? It serves to invalidate the results preceding that change.

Anyway, interested to hear your thoughts / insights

Wasnt a penalty. If you wanted those points you should have played better.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Are you denying the ball hit his hand?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Doesn't make it a handball mate. Personally thought City got the best of decisions. Mendy should have walked at very least.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It touched his hand which means it was a penalty up until they changed the rules again last week.

That's the point of the post.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They didn't change the rules. They said they should be viewed and applied less stringently and with more subjectivity.

If you're placing your hopes of beating us on that then it's a poor showing from your 600 million pound team.

A team that's won more in the last 8 years than you have in your history just wants the rules to be applied equally over the course of a season.

Ohh, nice comeback.

Let your attackers know not to fall over under a breath of wind and maybe you'd win more games. Suppose the Sheikh can't buy our fans or your players class, though...

Sadly, if we lost to that being handball, the talk today would be all about the penalty rule and not the fantastic game of football that we all witnessed.

Penalty all day long, just like that foul on Bernardo by Dallas was a red card.

You rode your luck, it won't happen every game.

Rode our luck

Could have been a red card for Dallas, fair enough. Should have been a red card for Mendy. Comfortably.

We had more possession, and made your keeper work more, all without diving, and with two first teamers out, without spending 200 million on our defence. Think you rode your luck, if I'm being honest with you.

We probably will get drubbed at some point, but won't take away that, in my view, we outclassed you, in all sense of the word.

So you don't think it was sensible to reinterpret the rules in a way that most pundits and fans agreed was only fair and right? I sense a whiff of sour grapes...

You were a shambles for the first 20 minutes, if we'd had Aguero and/or Jesus fit it could have been 4-0 at HT.

You shaded possesion as you should as the home team and I thought you played well but to say you outclassed us is ridiculous.

You controlled the first 20 minutes, true enough. Shame about almost all the rest of the game though. "If we'd had Aguero..." if we'd had 600 million pounds to spend.

Your team is stacked. Don't complain that your attackers aren't good enough. We brought a 20 year old off the bench who made your defence look ragged. You think Sterling and Mahrez shouldn't be getting the better of Cooper, Dallas and Ayling?

Have any of you actually read the OP?

I'm all for making the rules better but not after the season has started. There were plenty of outrageous given in the previous 2 weeks that have benefiited some teams to the detriment of others which can't be right.

I'm not that bothered about yesterday's 'handball' as long as referees and VAR are consistent for the rest of the season.
