Books

Fook yir covid.

Read these 2 footy books amongst others whilst I was sunning in the med last week.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/State-Play-Under-Skin-Modern-ebook/dp/B07BZNY378/ref=sr_1_15?dchild=1&keywords=football+books+calvin&qid=1602101957&sr=8-15

Have read Calvin's other books and you could tell that this one was a bit of a contrived compilation of material he'd not been able to use or the editor had cut from these? He's not the worst writer. The subjects are interesting but it's not that inspirational so you come away thinking aye, that's right but that's about all. Actually, you come away a bit depressed about youth football and the power of the big clubs. 5/10

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Zonal-Marking-Making-European-Football-ebook/dp/B07KKYSXMQ/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=football+books+cox&qid=1602102150&sr=8-2

If you've read The Mixer then the this book is Cox's go at doing the same for European football. It is fook all to do with zonal marking the title knocks a point off it. Like The Mixer I found it tough to put down as he draws you in with a knack for recreating the games and eras that he draws on to make his point. Yes, it is about the popularisations of formations over time and in different leagues with varying success - sounds absolutely boring but he manages to link it really well and explains it well too so you come away with an understanding e.g. that not all 3-5-2s are the same depending on era, manager, culture & country. It only falls down in the last chapter where he assure that the baton of success and era-leading superiority has passed to English football. 8.5/10

Enjoy.

Where to Find Islands by Archie Pelago is a good read, as is The Industrial Revolution by Otto Mattick.

Silver lad.

My daughter is into reading books ...old school,,as is my wife and mum, but I struggle.

Read some Rebus stuff and comedies in summer time, but more a papers guy.

Will try your books.....need mindfulness book chilling as my head is melted at present with wife's mum dying, WFH, covid, lockdown boozing, life and Life again.

No worries. Don't read many books outside of holiday and even then no fiction. I know you can learn stuff through fiction but never got my head around reading made up stuff versus reading factual stuff or at least stuff based on facts. My problem. Prefer filling up with science, travel, history, current affairs and the like too.

Take care.

Read a few Tom Holland books (the historian, not Spiderman) Rubicon and Persian Fire specifically, he writes in way that tells the factual story but reads almost like a novel. I would recommend.

I am back on fiction books after reading a lot of biographies for a few months. Read Jason Fox's autobiography which was quite harrowing and set a lot of alarm bells off in my own head. He is a lot more down to earth and humble than Ant Middleton who thinks he is an A list celebrity these days with an opinion on everything.

Finished the Orphan X series which were easy reading and enjoyable if not far fetched Hollywood esque writing.

The next Jack Reacher book is out this month. Another author I like is Matthew Reilly, his books are way OTT Hollywood esque writing but enjoyable fare. The penultimate book in one of his series is out shortly.

Next books on my reading pile are:
The Institute by Stephen King
New Jack Reacher
New Harlan Coben book
