This is something I’ve heard from some of our fans.
Now I don’t want to sound deluded but I don’t necessarily agree with that. We’re not one of the favourites or one of the best sides in the tournament. We could still very well go out in the group stage. There’s two other very good teams in our group.
My argument is that the Champions League is a lottery and the best team in Europe doesn’t always win it. Worse sides than our current crop have won it and the majority of teams who do win it get a huge slice of luck somewhere along the way at least once.
Another argument is that there are very few great sides in Europe. PSG were last years finalists and I know they were without Marquinhos and Verratti but looking at their team last night their midfield and defence is not that great.
Real haven’t strengthened a team that was already in decline and Barca haven’t done much in the market either.
Juventus don’t look all that and their manager is still an unknown quantity.
Liverpool are still a top team but in reality they haven’t been as good in 2020 as the previous 2 years. VVD is a huge loss also. They are obviously still a contender but are beatable these days.
City well you still really don’t know what you will get from them.
Bayern are the favourites and are the best side in Europe but I’m not sure they are invincible either.
Anyway my point is that I don’t think we will even come close to winning it but I hate the defeatist attitude that we are here to make up the numbers.

😹 how can you quantify that statement though? Chelsea had Lampard, Terry, Drogba, Ballack, Mata, Cech, Cole etc. Just because the way they won the CL in such a crazy way doesn’t mean they were worse than us.

The point is that they weren’t ‘much worse’ than this United side when talking about our chances of winning the CL. That nous and experience got them through some tough games. I doubt our squad has anything like that when talking about winning it this season.

Come on, they just put 4 past one of the best defenses in Europe, without breaking sweat.
Mate, you DO sound delude when you try to convince yourself that Utd can win the CL.
Not even in the top 6/7 teams in the competition to be honest.
