Leeds Players help Rashford Campaign

Leeds captain Liam Cooper told Sky Sports News: "Me and the players are really fortunate and we are in a position to help and therefore we are delighted to support the campaign from Leeds City Council inspired by Marcus. No kids should go to bed hungry."

The Leeds United squad have pledged £25,000 towards Marcus Rashford's campaign to end child food poverty in the UK.

Rashford has been urging the Government to continue their free school meals programme over the upcoming school holidays, having already successfully forced them to extend the scheme over the summer.

The 22-year-old's campaign was put forward for a vote in Parliament by Labour, but it was rejected. However, an ever-growing number of councils and businesses are committing themselves to Rashford's proposals.

Businesses and people are stepping up where the government has failed and is failing people. Great to see players and managers put rivalry aside and come together for a good cause.

Families on low incomes with children get enough benefits where no child should be starving. It's just a shame that their are chitty parents out there who prioritise their own wants e.g. junk food, alcohol etc over the needs of their children.

That needed saying to be honest.

I’m in agreement that no child in our country should go to bed hungry but I don’t agree that it’s the governments responsibility to feed those children. That responsibility is their parents and if, for whatever reason, they can’t afford to feed their kids then they should be getting extra help from social services. That’s what they are there for.

If they really need free meals during the holidays then I’m sorry but the parents either need help and guidance into how to cook a cheap meal or they need to look at their lifestyle.
--------------------------------

There was an MP on the Andrew Marr show this morning explaining that in response to the challenges caused by Covid - 19 the provision through universal credit had been increased so more money to low income households which can be used for food.

But where is the money going to? The parents, some of who are failing their children through mismanagement of funds.

If parents are incapable of feeding their kids then let Rashfords charity step in and do it for them. Stop the extra money to universal credit and give it to Rashfords charity then let the charity give food direct to the children. That way the parents who can't manage their money won't have the opportunity to waste it before complaining they cannot feed their children.

Went through something similar as a kid. And in the
early days of being a parent. To me, Rashford is what's
great about Britain. Now I can add LUFC players.

Proud of the lads. And massive respect to Marcus.

Fair points. Something does need to be done for them but it has to be done so that the kids benefit from it and not those parents who think it means an extra pack of cigs or a fourpack.

I’m all for giving more if it goes to the right places.

Maybe Children in Need could help? They do tend to get a lot more than the £1m they got at the first one in 1979.

Not sure why the government should be excused and people turn to charities and say that they should pull the slack. Being told there's no money for funding free meals for children and that a new tax would be needed? Perhaps we should stop giving free meals to MPs instead. I know which group need it more.

Seems to me like there's a lot of generalising going on about parents in these positions. Not going to get involved in any of that. There will be parents who work very hard and yet still struggle to feed their kids.

Still, the efforts of most Leeds fans have demonstrated that a good portion of people know that starving children is wrong. That's a positive, I suppose.

Look into how much MPs spend on their expenses. I'm sure if that was limited, especially when it comes to the meals they're allowed on it, I'm sure we could find the extra cash from that.

What world do you people live in, Universal Credit rates are far from generous, I work with young people leaving care, many because they are disadvantaged in their formative years have struggled in education and find it difficult to get work, up until April this year they have had their benefits frozen £57.80 for ten years. In April next year it will most likely go down to that again, that's for food, toiletries (including sanitary products, ask your Mrs how much they cost and then ask her again how it would feel to not be able to afford them), clothes, heating, fuel, water, council tax, TV license etc.
Johnson has bought himself a year's good grace, wait until April when all those people who have lost their jobs realise that they're going to have to survive off so much less than they are now.
The benefits rates in this country are amongst the worst in Western Europe even with the top up.
