Re-defining "Doing a Leeds"

For years the collapse of Leeds United due to financial mis management was labelled as "Doing a Leeds" and rightly so at the time.

Despite other clubs suddenly faring badly and dropping through the leagues and sometimes languishing in lower leagues for longer, its still Leeds who are associated with rapid financial decline.

At present, pundits and fans of other clubs alike are raving about Leeds United and Bielsa's impact.

We might just see a shift away from teh Harry Redknapp school of management which demands huge numbers of players transferred in lamenting about quality of players and a realisation that the right coach can improve the existing players and achieve amazing things.

I think we'll start to see "Doing a Leeds" become re-interpreted to symbolise what you can do with a world class manager who develops existing players and creates a hugely watchable football team.

Got to agree with some here, we will always hold that definition in a negative light. Our fall from grace was far too spectacular.

As mentioned, Bielsa has a shelf life, but imo he will leave at the top. I think I a hangover is likely as with all greats. Would be surprised if we are not already ASKING HIM who he believes can continue his work.

It wouldn't surprise me if O'Leary wasn't liked by his players – he was a bit up himself, wasn't he? But that's not his fault – he was a product of Arsenal. I do think that O'Leary had such a great bunch of players that he simply unleashed them and they won games. I believe another manager would have got even more out of them.

Maybe he should have been replaced with a world class manager so we didn't miss out on champs league, but there would have been uproar at the time.

------------

agree with this too Harroagte, why oh why did we get EL-tel in

Very Terrables! 😂

This isn’t unique to Leeds.

The ‘doing a Leeds’ label we’ve all become accustomed to is still the most appropriate.

O'Leary was one of our best managers we've ever had. Over 200 games in charge and won half of them

No he wasn't, he wasn't one of our best managers, just happened to be in the right place at the right time, there's a difference.

The facts are there though, saying another manager could have done the same or better is simply a matter of opinion, I wouldn’t be surprised if O’Leary is top 10 in terms of results. No trophies however.

to be fair, due to Beilsa, I think we all now see what a 'class manager' can do.. because I doubt very much that Oleary, or many others could do what he's done in terms of developing players, changing the mentality of the whole club..

since Beilsa has come in.. I think we all realise what a manager can do if he has the class... makes people, me for sure, look back and question a lot of what previous managers were doing.

I mean, Dave Hockaday, and the idiot from Barnsley - when you look at how we are now, its incredible to think these men were even considered as a mananger of Leeds.

Bielsa has opened my eyes for sure... and many others, to think at the time of beilsa appointment, people wnated Pullis instead... just imagine how that would of turned out.. and you can see why too, not even taking the p 1 ss.. it was all about getting promoted..

increible appointment bringing Beilsa to our club, truley incredible.

Doing a Leeds was thought of because of the size of the club and how fast and far it crashed, so anyone going the same way will get the Leeds label pointed at them!..

But, the way we've come back,(long overdue and crap management!)you have to say that AR and co have played the biggest part in this, they got flack for the way they were doing things, made mistakes, but at the same time they brought the club back from the death hole the melons before them placed us in!..

But like many have said, Bielsa was/is the master stroke!..

I wonder how many managers have as many former players talking about them as he has!..

And you can bet the players he's now leading will talk as well!..

Credit to AR and co, but the master is Bielsa!..
