Forgive a slightly click bait headline. But I do want to put forward just how significant replacing Kepa has been. We knew it would improve us, but I genuinely think that the form Kepa was in made Lampard’s job very very hard, and perhaps any manager would have struggled similarly with him.
As we all know when you deep Kepa’s stats it is really terrible reading. Under Lampard we as far as I know we concede more shots on target than other teams. But combine this Kepa’s shockingly poor %age and you get a disaster. You get the fact we’ve only had 5 clean sheets with Kepa in 2020, that under Kepa this season we’ve conceded an average of 2 goals a game. So far with Mendy he has backed up what the statistics suggested - replacing Kepa with even a standard ‘PL keeper would save us significant amount of goals conceded. He has kept 5 clean sheets (yes the same as Kepa for all of 2020) and our defence has also passed the eye test of looking more secure defensively with him in goal.
With Mendy coming in, there have been a lot of other changes to the side. Silva has come in, Chilwell as well. Lampard set up more defensively for United and Sevilla. But even then I just do think the limiting factor in all those games would be Kepa. Let’s not underestimate it, those saves that Mendy made against Sevilla in the first half, Kepa would not have got too. Suddenly we’re back to conceding 2-3 goals a game, back to defensive criticism for Lampard and the players. Playing more expansive today would just not be possible with Kepa either. The trust our players had at set pieces, in circulating the ball round the back. It is every single aspect.
When Kepa’s conceding a goal every three shots on target, what can you do to build a functioning football side? The guy was putting in the worst goalkeeper statistics in the league and probably amongst the worst seen foena consistent starting ‘keeper in the PL - how much success can any manager or defence have with that type of anomaly?
I don’t want to use it as a get out of jail free card for Lampard, or our other defenders for that matter. It sounds too simple too be true but perhaps it is so. The statistics and performances with and without Kepa support that a vast majority of our dysfunctionality as a team and as a defensive unit was down to him.
Was it Lampard..or was it just Kepa?
