They Played for them Both - Leicester City

Been a while since I did one of these, so thought I'd bust out my thinking cap (and a little bit of Google), and pick a team of players to have pulled on the hallowed white of Leeds United, as well as the crisp packet blue of Leicester City. I studied for three years at the University of Leicester, so this fixture is a special one for me. Hopefully we win, though. Without further ado, let's get into the team!

GK - Kasper Schmeichel - A pretty obvious choice in goal. Kasper was one of the revolving door of first choice keepers that we had in the Championship, and is probably a lot of people's best from that list. I never rated him that highly, but he has since earned a Premier League winner's medal, and established himself as one of the best and most consistent goalies in the top flight, so what do I know?

RB - Simon Grayson - A curious case here, Grayson struggled to establish himself in the first team as a player at Leeds, and will be more fondly remembered for his tenure as manager, where he won us promotion from League One. He will be most well remembered for Leicester fans as part of their league cup winning team in 1997, and managed around 200 appearances for the foxes.

CB - Alan Maybury - The first of many, many players in this team to be played out of position, Maybury was actually a full-back, but slots in at centre-back here. He was deputy for Gary Kelly at Leeds, struggling for first team appearances, but managed nearly a century during a short spell at Leicester. Most well known for his success north of the border, however.

CB - Patrick Kisnorbo - Similarly to Maybury, Kisnorbo joined Leicester City from Hearts, following then manager Craig Levein. He established himself well at Leicester, making more than 100 appearances, before joining Leeds in League One. Injuries marred his time at Elland Road, but he earned cult hero status for his dominating presence and his iconic bandaged headband. Helped Leeds escape the doldrums of League One.

LB - Mike Whitlow - A part of Leeds' 1992 title winning side, Whitlow actually left for Leicester part-way through the season. Ten years later, he was awarded the first division medal he was entitled to. He made just shy of a century of appearances for Leeds. Along with Grayson, he was a part of the Leicester team that won the league cup in 1997.

CM - Max Gradel - Gradel at centre mid, I hear you cry? Well, yes. I never said this team would be that well constructed, did I? Gradel plays here by virtue of a lack of options in the middle of the park. A flair player, Gradel will be better remembered by Leeds fans than Leicester's. He helped us escape League One (whilst earning a red card i n that game against Bristol Rovers), and scored plenty during his short time at Elland Road. He has since gone on to earn 75 caps for the Ivory Coast.

CM - Gary McAllister - You knew he was showing up in this team somewhere, right? Possibly the first name on the teamsheet, McAllister managed more than 200 games for both clubs, and is best known for being part of the midfield that helped Leeds to the old first division title in 1992. Enough said.

RW - Paul Dickov - Yes, yes, Paul Dickov wasn't a winger, but what can you do? The clubs need to start sharing more wide players, really. Stuck at right wing today, Dickov may be out of position, but hopefully he will be more effective here than he was during his short stint at Leeds, where he is most remembered for recieving his first yellow card before the game had actually started. Better remembered for Leicester, where he was prolific during a first spell in the early noughties. Came back in 2008 and was less so.

LW - Jermaine Beckford - He was quick, so I stuck him out wide. Sue me. Contrary to his counterpart on the opposite flank, Beckford was much more prolific for Leeds than he was Leicester. had crazy stats in League One prior to his big money move to Everton, and will forever be remembered for his goals against Bristol Rovers and Manchester United. My sole memory of him in a Leicester shirt was him getting hooked at half time after waving to the Elland Road crowd at corners.

ST - Allan Clarke - Now we get to see why Beckford and Dickov were consigned to the wings. Could any team of players who played for both these teams NOT include Sniffer? Perhaps much more successful at Elland Road, but both these clubs broke the British transfer record to get his signature. A serial winner for Don Revie's Leeds team, and very fondly remembered at the club.

ST - Don Revie - Don may not have been the most prolific of strikers by the time he wound up at Leeds, but does any man have a better legacy at the club? Came through at Leicester, where he bagged plenty of goals, and wound up as a Leeds legend. Partnering one of his disciples up top, Don just had to be in this team, if just for everything he achieved as Leeds manager.

As usual, an honourable mention to players who didn't make the cut (a lot of them strikers). Mark de Vries, Julian Joachim, Frank Worthington, Tommy Wright, Geoff Horsefield and Jamie Clapham. If you have any others I missed off (probably some obvious ones out there), then feel free to let me know!

“Sniffer”- I recall the media going rampant when Matt Gillies signed the most expensive player in the country at the time. I couldn’t believe it. An early season hat-trick within weeks of starting at Filbert Street and sitting nicely behind Andy Lochhead after he’d arrived later in 1968/69. What a skilful, willowy performer he was but the season was a long and arduous one and I believe there was some unrest in the camp around the time of the disaster at Goodison at the end of November and possibly from then onwards. I remember curling up on my chair and trying to hide when the Grandstand teleprinter score came through.

Maybe my mind is playing tricks on me, but didn't Pearson have to sub Beckford at half time at Elland Rd because he spent the first half waving at the kop?

Beckford's a really odd case. He didn't look interested half the time, yet scored a hattrick against Forest when suffering from a stinking cold. When re-visiting the KP with Preston, he gave the barracking back to the home faithful after scoring, but afterwards walked calmly past the stands applauding the home fans in a kind of acceptance that it was all good fun. And now as a pundit he comes across as knowledgeable and eloquent.

Damned if I can make the guy out. But for whatever reason I don't find myself disliking him. Not like DJ Campbell, for instance.

Beckford's heart was always at Leeds. He could score from anywhere at his peak.

Good Thread, not sure how you can leave Frank Worthington out though.
