Greenwood concerns systemic for PL??

Reports from different sides (journalist, national team, the club) show concerns that a very talented player like Mason Greenwood is lacking the basic discipline/good habits to do his job, being a professional footballer, properly.

https://metro.co.uk/2020/11/09/man-utd-concerned-over-mason-greenwood-after-everton-victory-13561523/

As a fan of the game in general, it pains me to see great players waste their talents by not taking good care of their body/mental health (by drinking, smoking, not enough rest, junk food, drugs, not taking training seriously, gambling, etc.).
You might argue that basically living like a Shaolin monk for the span of your career is not reasonable, but most of them don't show any evidence of being able to restrain themselves to moderate-low levels, its always excessive in one or multiple aspects. So a good habit for most players is just not dabble even a tiny bit into all those.

Greenwood might be salvagable yet, but for me it seems like this is occuring significantly more often with big British talents (Wilshire, Morisson, Rooney, Best, Gascoine) compared to players in Germany and Spain. Why do you guys think that's the case?

Let's remember the media like to stir the pot, especially if a lad has a certain skin tone (notice how little has been written about Foden).

It may be true, it may not... But just keep it in mind when reading this articles.

Has Foden done a couple of naughty things like Greenwood?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What naughty things has Greenwood done? There was the mistake that him and Foden both made whilst on international duty. What else?

Because all I have read so far is vague unsubstantiated rumours about him having a problem with his timekeeping. Ole has come out and said that is rubbish - pointing out that the press are always there when the team arrive for training and that they would know if Greenwood was late. Indeed, they would be able to provide what time he actually arrived in comparison to the other players. But instead they write something vague about how he is 'rumoured' to have a problem with his time keeping.

After Ole shot them down on the timekeeping story, they then moved on to him not applying himself in training - suggesting that he doesn't get enough sleep. Which is probably also a load of rubbish.

plent of german and spanish players seen as the next big thing would have fallen by the wayside but you wont hear about them as much because you wont follow the leagues as much.

mario Gotze is a prime example of one

That would be Mario Gotze, the player with 5 German Titles to his name and a World Cup winners medal having scored the winner in the final

He may contest he's wasted his talent.

Different type of work though, isn't it?

They're not cleaning out the changing rooms and scrubbing boots anymore - they're training and at all other times they're protected from the real world.

No wonder some of them grow up with a complete absence of discipline.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh yeah forgot about that aspect. Boot cleaning et cetera. On the whole I’m still quite impressed with modern footballers. Millions of pounds, girls throwing themselves at you, fame etc and most of them are extremely dedicated and sensible.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeh, I agree.

I just think that they're missing things that often help build humility and respect - although when you look at Rashford you'd be entitled to ask whether that is such a big issue.

We’re not talking about illegal things though. It’s stupid as you say. I was just countering the point made that a lot more was made of Greenwood’s actions over Foden’s due to skin colour when he’s done a few things.

Total overreaction from the media though, he’s not Ravel Morrison or Paul Gascoigne

As was discussed before if Goetze’s career is seen as a success then why are Rooney, Best, maybe even Gascoigne, seen as massive flops? All also objectively had good-great careers.

Off top of my head players from other countries who it is well argued have not reached their potential not due to lack of talent but due to non-football reasons;

France: Anelka, Ben Arfa, Nasri, Gourcuff, Diarra, Sinama-Pogolle
Germany: Schurrle, Dahoud, Meyer, Deisler, Draxler
etc.
Devil’s advocate that maybe it isn’t a problem significantly different in England to anywhere else.

Your conclusion (problem likely isn't different to anywhere else) is probably quite correct.

But there's a bunch of stuff in there that simply isn't true. For example, no sane person on earth thinks Rooney's career is/was a "massive flop". He's had an exceptional career. He's won countless trophies including the CL (plus two other final appearances), became top scorer for England & United. George Best was not a "massive" flop either. A flawed genius who could have prolonged his career at the elite end of the game, but not a flop by any means.

And a lot of those players you've listed were decent or very good but just simply not in the top bracket. We have a tendency to claim players haven't fulfilled their talents if they don't become one of the best players in their position, but that's an impossible standard to reach, because there can only be so many players considered the best of among the best in their positions at any one time. I'd say every player on that list ended up achieving roughly what their ability allowed for. You could make a case for one or two exceptions, of course.

Ole is to blame. He is like the supply teacher at school. Great fun to be around but there is no respect there.

Fans don't help.

When fans blame owners, directors, managers, for so much, the players, especially the youngsters can pass all responsibility for their failures onto their manager / director

This really isn't funny

Try to think beyond teacher references (PE, Supply etc) if you want to look clever whilst slagging the manager off.

It will make you look less like a coq on here.
