PL Player of the Season (So Far)

Good Morning Everyone

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher were talking about some of the standout performers in the PL for 2020 and it got me thinking about which players were early contenders for the Player of the Season.

Over a third of the season has been played now and I think we can whittle it down to the following names (correct me if I've missed anyone obvious).

Harry Kane - World class striker who typically starts the season slow but this time around has been outstanding. His hold up play is arguably the best on the planet. 10 assists at this stage of the season is very impressive.

Son Heung-Min - alongside Kane, has started the season on fire. The stats alone tell you that. His pace is a nightmare for defenders and 11 goals is a fantastic contribution.

Andy Robertson - seldom do defenders get the praise they deserve (Van Dijk aside) but Andy Robertson has got to be the most consistent player in the PL, perhaps in Europe. He has been the outstanding fullback in world football for a about 2-3 years now. He has started this season on fire - perhaps Liverpool's best player. I expect to hear his name in the running more and more as we enter the new year.

Mo Salah - perhaps nobody in the PL is ignored more than Salah. Kane and Son have put up great numbers this season but Salah is still the leading goal scorer. His stats since joining Liverpool are the stuff of legend. Apparently the best Goal/Assist contribution rate the PL has ever seen.

Bruno Fernandes - A transformative signing. Singlehandedly got United back into the CL and he has maintained his quality in the opening games of this campaign. The kind of player that could derail an entire season if injured. 9 goals and 5 assists so far.

Fabinho - Outstanding start to the campaign. Filling in for Van Dijk, Liverpool have looked more assured than ever - notably because of our Brazilian powerhouse. Arguably the best CB in the league so far this season - and is a naturally a midfielder

My thoughts...

I'd say the 2 frontrunners ought to be Kane and Robertson

I think Harry Kane will have a strong chance this year. English players tend to get a lot of support from the press. However, I do think Tottenham need to stay in the CL places to give them the best chance. He's been slightly more impressive than Son given his all-round play.

Robertson has been the best player for the best team. That always bodes well. Doesn't get the adulation of someone like Trent, probably for his age and not being the local hero but Andy is a Kop favourite and if he persists with these machine mode performances then he'll be firmly in the conversation.

Have a good day everyone

Seen a few mentions for Chilwell. He’s been good for us but not player of the season good. Last 4-6 weeks he’s dropped off a bit in performance. Not been bad but just kinda average, although up until then he was good. Our whole defence has been good but I think RJ, Zouma and Thiago have all been better.

Grealish, Calvert-Lewin & Vardy also deserve a shout.

Fofana has gone completely under the radar too.

I’d like to keep Fofana under the radar too thanks very much

Won't be long before he gets poached by one of the big sides if he keeps up his form this season. Then again, this was said about Soyuncu 12 months earlier as well.

Thing is when you (us in this case) pay 32m for a player at 19 how much do you think he’s going to cost??? Let’s just say we would want more than maguire if he carry’s on!

For sure you will make a profit on him, that much is unquestionable but there are enough teams in the league and enough money at the Big Six clubs to pay what you'd be demanding for him. Think of what United and Liverpool have spent on Maguire and Van Djik and it's not as if Chelsea are anti-spending either.

I’m not in denial that he won’t be sold, just think he will be that good there will be many teams interested and the price will be sky high

don't let nick see this he might accuse you of being defensive

Stretchy, not talking about team of the season but how do you think Mendy is doing

Looks capable and an interesting back story as well.

Boy comes good is always a nice read.

Yeah I like Mendy. His first like 8-10 games were great. Then in last 3-4 games we’ve seen some shaky moments. I personally like him because he in theory should have a lot more potential to grow into, to be coached, as despite his age he’s quite inexperienced.

I think most fans even if they don’t fully rate him accept he’d still be fine as back up/competition to another first choice ‘keeper at worst and at best he continues to improve and can carry on being starter

only negative for me with mendy was the mad penalty.

Dont blame him for the leeds goal.
