A strong defence allows the forwards to have an off day

A strong defence gives you a good chance to challenge for honours.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

You need a good defence no doubt

But imo our defence isn't our biggest problem.

Our forwards don't keep the ball. Our defence is always under the kosh
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yep hold up play is poor, too profligate too

Exactly the point I was making earlier in the thread. Everything with our forwards is off the cuff, if it comes off we look dangerous but a high percentage of the time it doesn’t and we constantly put our defence under pressure. How any fan can look at us messing those chances and blame the defence is beyond me.

Yeah but you just used Vardy as the example that we’d of won if we had him not rashford

Vardy doesn't play out wide.

Vardy just admitted it was going wide

And it was but for Axel's inadvertent deflection

Vardy had his chance and messed it up just like rashford, only difference was axel

I get what you are saying but a good striker causes the panic for own goals. Vardys movement and being where he was is what made that goal happen.

Bar maybe cavani our strikers don't get into positions to create OG

I think this game we should have won by about 4 goals really. We always seem to drop points in the games that are one sided.

It's a big beef of mine tbf and something I've been going on about since last season.

We lose the ball very quickly in opposition half and often lose it in ours. The playing from back results in us conceding throw ins virtually within 3/4 passes.

Our defence has stay on the line ddg and lose the ball forwards. They are not getting any help and imo that's why they always look unsettled

I do not want to sound like an apologist for our forwards but what you are talking about is a midfield issue

I refer to it as a resting formation. Utd do not have a resting formation. They are always throwing everything towards attack or defending desperately. When we throw everything into attack we often score but when we do the same in defence we will still concede because we lack the quality in defence to do so and this is not to say our defenders are poor, just not that level

Leicester Ciry expected goals was 0.45 vs Man Utd 2.08. Many times we have conceded 2 goals to teams whose expected goals is near 0.

following on from my last post.
we had the same issue before carrick join when we did not have a resting formation. This was particularly exposed against the top teams in the league and the ucl. We literally had to rely on overscoring.
I remember carrick joining and utd then controling the pace of games and picking their moments to attack which was devasting for most opponents

With all due respect Garner that may be part of it, but Martial, Rashford and too an extent Bruno (also greenwood and James when they play) losing possession time and again when the ball is played into feet by being too weak or trying flicks around the corner etc... is not a midfield issue or a set up issue, it’s purely a player issue.
