Jonny Evans signs contract extension

Great news - Jonny has signed a contract extension to summer 2023.

Good news and move by the club, I understand there were doubts he’d sign it at one point so it’s good it’s finally confirmed.

I'm surprised that there should be doubts he would sign, unless there was something in the terms he didn't like (wage/contract length/promise of squad status, etc.). The impression I got was that it was his camp getting concerned over whether he was even going to be offered a contract.

Still, contract negotiations and agents are funny things, so I guess the important thing is that it's done.

There were some strange links with Man Utd a month or so ago but other than that I’ve always seen Evans as someone that was going to be offered a contract and would be accepting it.

Mainly for the fact Rodgers is in love with him and wants to be Mr Evans!

Evans was probably getting agitated that the negotiations weren’t going how he wanted hence the Man U rumours appeared. Happens all the time

While there was noise about this contract from either or both of the club/Jonny's agent and there was no signed contract in place it was always concerning given how important he is to our back line - the thought of having a relatively inexperienced Fofana/Soyuncu pairing as our main option for these crucial positions does not look particularly attractive in the short term; that definitely looks exciting for the future provided they continue to grow and develop under Jonny's tutelage.

JE is so important because he always steadies his CB partner.

Maguire played better with Evans by his side as did Morgan. It's the role that Huth played when he first came to Leicester and Morgan suddenly looked like a top PL centre back.

I was worried about the transition from Huth and Morgan as they aged, but the fact it's not been painful is largely down to Evans. The new era of Fofana, Soyuncu and, potentially, others can now be ushered in more slowly if Jonny stays fit and healthy.
