Being a fan and my "olephobic" comments

Firstly let me start this off by saying that I respect all Manchester United fans on this board. I get incredibly frustrated with some of you but you all support the club in your own way, and some of you are veterans following the club home & away for decades so salute to you.

That said, we have to keep it all the way real. For decades United has been bigger than just a Manchester Club and most fans are not match-going fans...

We all have our unique expectations for United based on our relationship with the club...

Whether we like it or not, that is a fact and in many ways the non-match going fans are just as important to the club today.

That being said, I still think we ought to have more in common than that which separates us, so let's try to focus on that.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

ABOUT ME

1. I have never said that trophies is the most important thing to me. In life, what is important to me is the journey not the result and that is why I am not getting carried away with current results, I’m more interested in how we achieve them.

2. I am a workaholic, I don’t watch TV or listen to much music, I only have United as a hobby and over the past 6 years, seeing us playing good footy has become paramount for me.
--------------------------------------------------------------

BEING A FAN

- The idea of being a ‘real’ fan is subjective, out-dated, and totally irrelevant.

- The ‘real’ fan ideology is only used to shut-down discussions and it’s never productive.

- I will ignore any comments along the lines of this ‘real fan’ ideology.

- We all make unique sacrifices to be a loyal fan that are significant and personal irrespective of our postcodes.

--------------------------------------------------------

MY VALUES AS A FAN

- I want entertaining football.

- I want my club to win BUT not at the expense of entertaining football.

- I am fair to the manager, I give credit and criticism when it is due.

- I do not change my opinion on a game by game basis.

- I am not stubborn, I am happy to change my opinion based on new information.

- I judge games based on what I see on the pitch, not just stats or results.

- I want to see the Manchester United footballing values of Sir Matt & Sir Alex continue.

- Sport is about competition, if we don’t aspire to be the best at what we do, why take part or follow any club in particular?

Would fans accept another trophy less season? I’d like to see us winning some silverware this season. Unlikely to win the title but Europa or FA cup would be great.

I'd rather put up a real fight for the title and finish just off the top than win a trophy, tbh. It's all about progress.

Look at Arsenal and the FA cup win... A one off pot, but the issues were still clear as day (as they would have been if we won something, last season).

Depends which fans. You won't see demonstrations outside the ground, so if they don't accept it their options are limited.

Honestly, right now I would trade a convincing top 2 or 3 finish for the Europa League or FA Cup.

I have my doubts that Ole can deliver trophies and I think his shortcomings are pretty obvious to a lot of us right now, but time makes fools of us all and I'll be delighted if/when I am proven wrong.

There are certain individuals in the squad who I don't think deserve the honour of being Manchester United players (James and Pogba for starters), and I'll be the first to admit I'm not shy about voicing my frustrations when their names appear on the team sheet, let alone when they perform exactly as poorly as I expect them to. I do also worry that there are a couple of players in key positions for us that are overrated by a lot of our fans, the media and club staff, which I do think hinders our progression (Rashford & Martial).

That being said, and sort of echoing the OP, I support United to be entertained. It's why I love football, and why I despise Jose Mourinho and became almost apathetic towards United a few years back.

Ole - for all his faults - has rejuvenated me as a fan. We play exciting, unpredictable football. We do ship goals, which is a big problem, but we score a lot too.

If you can't enjoy being joint top of the PL midway through the season, with an opportunity to go into a game against 2nd place with a 3 point advantage, then I do feel for you.

Ole has got the lads playing with mentality of United players, and I do actually trust him to find a couple more players with the ability of United players. Worst case scenario, Burnley give us a tanking tonight and I'll be on the match thread cursing Ole to hell for starting James, with Pogba and Matic in a midfield two. If we do lose tonight it makes the game against Liverpool particularly spicy, which you can deny is an exciting prospect as a fan.

I actually thought we would win the League cup and now I'm not so confident we have enough to get over the line and win something but ithink most fans woul accept a trophyless season for a top 3 finish and a good football going into the summer

I think we might all have misread the OP’s sentiments.

Ole’s brand of football is not only the “least offensive to the eye” of all of the bosses we’ve had since SAF, Ole has also “overachieved as our manager”.

The OP is “enjoying the journey back to the top” particularly considering “we should not be expecting more from our team on paper”.

Sounds like on balance he is delighted about how the manager is performing, and has every reason to feel that way.

Which is high praise from someone who believes that Manchester United should only ever “be recruiting managers that have the potential to become one of the top managers of all time”.
