Dortmund backtracking over 120m Sancho

“The alleged transfer fee often mentioned in the media never existed in reality. And if you get a signal at some point that a large part of the amount offered will only be paid in a few years, it will finally be a pure theoretical discussion."

Hans-Joachim Watzke, Borussia Dortmund CEO

So basically he knows he’s facked up and is back tracking fast before the summer

I’m not sure they do. I remember reading a while back that top clubs don’t consider it for the reasons I’ve given.

Sancho will be more marketable by signing for Liverpool or Man United than he ever would playing for England, so I don’t think it matters much.

He’ll be on the bench anyway so it’s not going to make a difference.

I just don't buy that. You're talking about spending 80m or whatever and you're just going to ignore how he does in a major tournament because you don't like international football? Doesn't make sense to me. I reckon the top clubs consider everything. His attitude and application in every game, and especially high pressure situations, would be a big factor in their decision.

I love international football. Doesn’t mean I think that tournament performances have any bearing on club football.

Messi and Ronaldo are the two best club footballers of all time. But they’ve regularly gone missing in international tournaments.

The majority of England players in the history of the game have gone missing in tournaments. Didn’t stop them being excellent club performers.

Not disputing that, but that's not what we're talking about. We're talking about the influence of international tournaments on transfer fees.

The vast majority of those England players were already playing in the PL week in, week out. It wouldn't affect them much either way. The Euros is a great platform to show the world what he's all about. If he doesn't, he's got an excuse. But if he does step up it's great for him.

And anyway. We've had some amazing individual performances despite the generally crap showing from England. There's usually a standout player or two from every tournament.

The Maguire hype after the world cup for example..

But you initially brought up the ability to consistently perform at a top club, I’m disputing that tournaments have much relevance to that. Which is why I gave examples of international football not having much bearing on club level. The transfer fees is something you’ve added to the debate, that I don’t think is all that important, but it detracts from the initial point anyway.

I think you can become overhyped because of a tournament but clubs won’t care one bit if you don’t perform. I’ve never seen a player not get signed (at least not in recent years) due to a bad few games at a tournament.

Fair. We've disagreed on that, I'm not going to keep banging the same drum. I do think it goes some way to illustrating that he'd be able to cope with the pressure at a big club but I accept you don't. It's all a part of the same reasoning, though, which is the I think the Euros is worth judging him on. I really can't see why you'd think a club wouldn't consider this form at the Euros worth paying attention to.

Maguire wouldn't have been an 80m defender if he didn't play like he did at the world cup.

Btw the transfer fee discussion started the whole debate. Me saying he's not worth 80m yet.

Whenever his shoulder ever allowed him to, Bryan Robson never under- performed in an England shirt.
