Leeds U23 vs Stoke U23 Matchday Thread

Welcome to the Thread, yet another chance to put the misery of the first team performance behind us as the U23 seek to put distance between themselves and the pack at the top of the Premier League 2 table.
Venue Thorp Arch

Date 18th Jan.

Kick Off 13:00hrs

Team News
Leeds United
Leeds field a strong line up with Phillips, Costa, Roberts, Poveda and Llorente getting minutes.

Line up:

Caprile
Huggins
Davis
Philips
Cresswell
Llorente
Costa
Jenkins
Roberts
Greenwood
Poveda

Subs: Van Den Heuvel, Kenneh, Casey, McKinstry, Summerville

Stoke:
Not a clue who any of these guys are but

Nina Noukou
Coates
Bauer
Macari
Forrester
Wimmer
Malone
Sparrow
Varlan
Porter
Norton

Links............….LUTV

Yet another game where Gelhardt doesn't make the bench even, wonder if he is injured or, as I suspect, he is going out on loan.

Think the changes will be quite disruptive but good to see some of the guys getting some minutes especially Llorente.

Llorente off, Casey on,
Phillips off, Kenneh on
Roberts off, McKinstry on

Suggests Llorente and Roberts will be involved against Newcastle then.

Another U23 game next Monday best. Expect Diego to get another 45 minutes then to build up his fitness. Nothing to concern me in Llorente's game today.

One full blooded challenge which saw the Stoke player injured and Llorente came out of it unharmed, bodes well.

Llorente got a lot of praise on social media. Hopefully he keeps fit and gives Koch work to do when he returns

Llorente plays for Spain recently did a good job on Ronaldo, he’s hardly likely not to shine in the u23s, I don’t think we will see the best of him until next season but I think we will have a player,

My ratings:

Caprile (6) little to do in the first half, poor touch giving the ball away which could have led to a Stoke goal. Rarely challenged
Davis (7) some good runs but gave the ball away on occasion.
Cresswell (8) Another good game, solid in central defence
Llorente (8) defended well, some good long passes, very close to a wonder goal and scored the winner, noticable that we were nowhere near as good in the second half when he came off. Scored the winner, always in the right place.
Huggins (8 MOTM) Stoke could only stop him by pulling him down, excellent on the ball. Should have scored when only the keeper to beat. One for the future.
Phillips (8) Looked a class apart in the first half, controlled the midfield and like Llorente, missed in the second half. Peach of an assist for the goal.
Costa (7) some good touches, great pass for Poveda who should have scored.
Jenkins (7) Solid but has had better games.
Greenwood (7) worked hard and unlucky not to score, keeper made a couple of good saves. Booking reduced his effectiveness. No longer playing up front but still gets lion share of the chances.
Poveda (7) worked hard, good on the ball and showed some nice touches but can be frustrating. Should have scored. Him and Costa lining up as the wall a bit puzzling.
Roberts (8) worked hard some fine touches on the ball, again missed in the second half, Stoke defence couldn't deal with him.

Subs

Kenneh (6) close to getting a straight red after only being on the pitch for ten minutes. His effectiveness was diminished as he always looked close to crossing that line. Looked very clumsy and Stoke were able to pass through him as they got a foot hold.
Casey (6) didn't do much wrong to be fair but Llorente and Cresswell much more effective in the first half.
McKinstry (5) weakest player on the pitch, gave the ball away a lot, barely noticeable as the half progressed.

I see your point Don but in central defence the basics remain the same. When watching games like this you are looking at a number of factors other that his performance relative to the other guys on the pitch.
