Footballers post retirement

Hi all,

Hope you're all keeping well and safe. I've been in isolation for almost a month now after coming back from Hungary and then being in close contact with a covid positive colleague. Being at home all day, and working from home got me thinking, what do footballers do once they've retired?

Footballers retire very early, with the peak of their lives (35 - 45 IMO) ahead of them. They've usually amased enough money to sit idle. But can retired footballers really just do nothing? Going from such a busy lifestyle to just doing nothing?

We know so go into management, punditry, a few will go into education (Park Ji Sung), others into business (Flamini). But what do the the large chunk of footballers do?

What would you do if you retired aged 38 with a full bank balance?

I wouldn't he able to sit idle. It would drive me crazy 🤣

Imagine having all the money and options in the world and you want to be a hedge fund manager.

Right?

“What do you want to be when you grow up Little Johnny?”

“I’d like to be a gangster who leaches money from unwitting investors at the cost of the stability of the financial system and the jobs of the gainfully employed, and to the benefit of absolutely nobody else. I’d like to produce nothing of utility and contribute absolutely nothing to society.”

I think people’s opinion to work is different. Some need it to function some don’t.

My dad who is 60 was offered a healthy package to retire with. He’s leaving his job next month and it can’t come soon enough for him. He’s have left years ago if it was financially possible. He plays a lot of golf, enjoys gardening, sports and going for a pint at the weekend so there will be plenty to keep him occupied in retirement.

My mates dad is 65 and has to retire this year and isn’t looking forward to it at all. Doesn’t have a lot of interests and hobbies outside of work.

Everyone is different in their opinion of work.

I dont want to earn a living...I like to make a living. As a hedge fund manager the amount of tax and business opportunities you would give back...and I would...would be far greater than most other careers.

Jobs...charities...helping the homeless...I could give millions and it would be sustainable. Not every financial institution has to be manipulative.

Interestingly it’s seemingly those that need work that deteriorate quicker post work. Anecdotal but I’ve heard and spoken to quite a few old timers that say the same. Those that don’t miss it seem to get on better.

I’d retire tomo

Hopefully some future Redditors get to GB too!

give back in taxes

Hello mate. I hope you’re well and aren’t working your backside into the ground

(Maybe we should get into hedge fund management like GB, so we can just put our feet up, let the millions roll in, and concentrate on our charity work instead of ‘contributing’ like the mugs we are.)
