It seems like there's more freak results this season than ever. Just off the top of my head, you wouldn't expect anything like these any other year:
Villa 7 - 2 Liverpool
Palace 0 - 7 Liverpool
United 9 - 0 Southampton
United 1 - 6 Spurs
United 6 - 2 Leeds
Palace 4 - 1 Leeds
City 2 - Leicester 5
Arsenal 0 - Villa 3
Why's it happening? Can't just be down to a lack of fans in the ground, can it?

Back in the days of yore, Burnley beat us 6-1 at their place on Boxing day.
We beat them 5-0 at our place on New year's day.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There's that United - Spurs christmas period double header where they won 6-1 at their place, then we beat them 6-1 at ours a few days later. It's on the Match of the Day video that was released.

It was 5-1, 1965

Every season has "freak results". Sometimes everything just goes right for a team. The only real shocker is Villa smashing Liverpool 7-2.
I mean, in the 14-15 season Leicester beat United 5-3, Stoke smashed Liverpool 6-1, Southampton beat Villa 6-1, City beat QPR 6-0, Arsenal beat Liverpool 4-1, Chelsea beat Everton 6-3, Spurs beat Chelsea 5-3, United beat City 4-2.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What a nerd who even remembers this much
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, you have to remember everything. One day someone will invent a way to quickly look up a season so you can all recall what I have stored in my memory

I think I'm with KingKenny on this one, fixture pile-ups and the clubs' inability to get players conditioning just right are skewing things this year. It's not just like the other seasons where there have been some big scores, it genuinely feels like a daft result's always just round the corner.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Exactly. The fact we smashed palace looking superb for the first time in a while and then went on that awful run just shows the massive swings being seen.

Some teams didn’t have a preseason either.
VAR probably having an impact too (Martial red but Lamela not, Bednarek red last night for example)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I am genuinely interested to know what impact Bednarek had on last nights game.

The Villa one was a freak in itself. They had so little possession but so many shots and it seemed like everytime they shot it deflected off somebody and went in. I've never seen anything like it. It felt like we didn't even play that badly, although obviously we did with them having so many shots.
The United Southampton one was a possibility considering they got a player sent off inside two minutes and had so many players missing. Not really a freak but still unexpected to score nine goals.
I think the fixture pile up is a big part of it with so much rotation and so many injuries.

I've looked it up. It was 6-1 at the Turf on Boxing day. 5-1 at OT two days later. I went to both games.

I don’t think the Arsenal or Leeds results are freak results.
But you get stuff like this most seasons. Though some of these are quite extraordinary.

It didn’t really do much other than it helped inflate the score line from 6 to 9.
Was just a recent example of how VAR can impact a game

5 games tonight and 5 away wins. Does that count as freaky?

Yup.
Wins at Anfield for Burnley and Brighton, when Liverpool hadn't lost a game there for god knows how long. I'm giving that a freaky as well.
