Ed's take on Munich....

I’ve always known about the history of what happened. Today it’s my turn to be at this club, and to wear this shirt with pride, just as those players were also part of the club at that time“

"(Everton) is a vital game for us given the circumstances of the league table just now, but more especially, because it’s an important date for this club and for this team."

“We hope we can do justice to the occasion by playing well and are able to provide a victory for the relatives and families of those people who were involved in the tragedy."

Edinson Roberto Cavani Gómez

Anybody else think this guy will quickly become a United legend?

Berbatov was great to watch though

On his day yes I agree.

Signing Berbatov in 2008 and not demanding at least Robben in the deal for Ronaldo the following summer was yet more outstanding business by the club.

Think Ferguson just couldn’t resist buying a striker and while Berbatov probably wasn’t what we needed he was a joy to watch at times.

probably doing one over City was an incentive for Fergie to pursue him until the deadline

He was but signing him just went against the quick fluid attack we'd built and were so successful with the previous two seasons.

We facked Tevez over by signing Berbatov and made ourselves worse for it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Agree with this totally. We didn’t need to sign him. SAF didn’t make too many mistakes but signing Berba was one.

A young talented forward as an understudy for Rooney and Tevez would have been a better choice imo.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hindsight is wonderful though. At the time I can only remember being thrilled with his signing, as were most fans I read and talked to.

A bit like Sanchez. People will act now like they knew better but at the time that was a bit of a coup and was very well received.

Same with most signings post Fergie. Go back and read the comments about Di Maria etc. Easy to talk like Ed and others were clueless at the time but so many signings were received well at the time.

I agree but we stood Berba when Zlatan moved from Barca to Milan for a similar price that Berba cost a few years later.

Not everybody's using hindsight in this case though.

I was however more than pleased we signed Di Maria.

I think Ibra's time at Barca and relationship with Pep etc would need to be accounted for though really. The circumstances are very different.

At the time Berbatov was a very good striker and people latched onto the 'final piece of the puzzle' cliche.

I agree that in hindsight it can be seen as a mistake but I won't use it as a stick to beat anyone with because I was well happy we signed him. Same with Sanchez, annoys me a bit when people insult people at the club when they were probably slapping their hands together like an over zealous seel with more more enthusiasm than a group of OAPs doing the clap for NHS.

If Ed is an idiot for singing Sanchez then so am I and about 90% of our fan base. I'm just not a fan of hypocrisy.

I get you but seeing as I don't have access to specifics that individuals here said at the time, I'm just having to be a bit lazy and generalise. The general feeling at the time was that he was a great signing. That's not to say some people didn't call it out at the time, I just believe they were very much in the minority which wasn't the feeling I got from people when reading the thread.
