Scott McTominay

What a good season Scott McTominay is having, particularly the past 6-8 weeks.

He now has 7 goals this campaign, only Bruno and Rashford have more. I assume it's a tactical tweak but his driving runs into the box and willingness to "have a go" are much improved.

I've always thought our fans have given him a rough ride, mostly because he's from the academy and he generally keeps things simple, but we need a player like the one he is hopefully becoming.

VDBs movement worries me, I actually think his work on the ball isn’t the issue, he finds quick passes in and around the area nicely. He is so static though, takes few risks and should be doing more to be in a position where is an option for his team mates.

Think he’s being harshly criticised tbh. He’s barely played and not sure he’s even had a full game?

Does seem like a player lacking in confidence, also doesn’t help when he’s been making intelligent runs but the passes never come.

People need to realise he isn’t the same sort of player as Bruno. He doesn’t need to be a carbon copy of him but we do need to get him back playing the way he was at Ajax.

All of this. OK so Donny hasn’t been amazing, but he’s not been bad either, just quiet. Hasn’t played nearly enough to be judged yet.

I have a raft of derogatory and some downright abusive articles and comments from his first season bookmarked, which I look forward to bringing out again repeatedly over the next few (and hopefully a successful career of) seasons.

Some of our fans either don’t understand the concept of player development or just plain hate our Academy for some reason, I swear.

You really are a small-minded, bitter and petty man, rosso. I think that's why I've always related to you.

We do need to get him up to speed if he’s going to deputise for Bruno though.

How do we do that though?

I think most of the work is going to have to be done in tactical and video sessions, and on the training ground.

His movement is there, and it isn’t terrible; it just doesn’t suit how we play at all.

That's not going to happen under current management.

He's doomed then.

The amount of abuse he received from the usual suspects was terrible. Moaning at the lad for carrying out the job that Jose had asked him to do. I did point out to them that he would need time to develop and that he was an especially late developer due to his size and ridiculous growing spurt. As expected, once the Jose shackles were off and he got some more first team experience, he has begun to prove his worth.

At the moment he is a valuable squad player. But such is his character and commitment, I expect that he will cement his place as a first team regular and perhaps captain/vice captain in the next few years. If every member of our squad had his attitude then we would probably to top of the table.

I'd just like to finish by adding that he currently has a better goals/assists contribution per minute than Pogba does this season. And we have all been talking about how Pogba has been much improved of late.

Agreed Elvis. A lot of people are reluctant to shed preconceptions about players, or quickly fall back on them after a bad game or a punished mistake.

Take the example of Jordan Henderson, who got pigeon-holed as a carthorse. Even as he was captaining a side that won the CL / league with no little swagger, the default position of opposition fans has been derision, and I'm sure there are plenty of Liverpool fans who love him but have all along thought of him as a player who could easily be upgraded. I don't think it's far-fetched to see McTominay being similarly integral to a United team that is better than the one we have today, and meanwhile continuing to be underrated.

Yep. Hendo is exactly who I was thinking of when I wrote that post and I believe that I've mentioned them in the same breath in the past. If McT can become as important to us as Hendo is for Liverpool then I'll be happy
