Transfer Targets: FC Barcelona Edition

It looks increasingly likely that Laporta is getting in again as FCB President on March 7th, which will mean Messi stays. Whilst we won’t have any money to spend, I think we can still have a terrific transfer window that deals with long term and short term targets. Just for the record, I would personally sell Griezmann but I don’t think the club will move him on this summer so he’s omitted.

Sales:

Dembele €65 mill
Coutinho €30 mill
Umtiti €30 mill
Junior Firpo €25 mill
Pjanic €25 mill
Braithwaite €10 mill

Purchases:

Aguero €0
Wijnaldum €0
Eric Garcia €0
Depay €0

We would be able to alleviate a lot of debt with those player sales in the summer and with (hopefully) normal revenues next season when fans return to stadiums, the debt should be sorted fairly quickly which would allow us to spend fairly normally in summer 2022.

I will now assess each inbound player below:

Aguero - Genuinely world class and despite his age of 32, he’d be top drawer for 2 seasons. Not to mention him and Messi tearing up La Liga! He’s out of contract and is simply too good to play for a team like City who offer no threat in Europe. He’s carried Pep to enough titles, now it’s time to have a final swan song and win that elusive UCL to top off a proper career

Wijnaldum - Another top class player and probably Liverpool’s most consistent midfielder under Klopp. At 30 years old he really needs to be playing for a team who compete for major trophies every season, not a side who are fighting it out with teams like Villa and West Ham for fourth place. Koeman seems to get a different beast out of him too, he would regularly score goals from midfield under Ron’s Holland side

Eric Garcia - I haven’t seen all that much of the young lad, but Pep was bending over backwards to keep him last season before Garcia rejected him and decided to leave at the end of his contract. People should remember it was only after Garcia’s decision to leave that Pep went after Dias, so that tells you all you need to know. He wouldn’t be a starter though and would have to fight to dislodge one of Pique or Araujo. Backup with Lenglet.

Depay - This one really excites me. Criminally mismanaged at United by the incompetent LVG and dinosaur Jose, Depay has it all in his locker to be world class. His hunger to succeed would be unparalleled after what happened at Old Trafford, the Lyon forward desperate to prove he’s a top player and not a nearly man. He could offer pace, creativity and goals in the final third and would be a master stroke by Koeman.

The above acquisitions would offer both short term, pragmatic quality and longer term objectives; immediate short term quality from Aguero and Wijnaldum, whilst we’d get 5-10 years minimum from Garcia and about 3-4 from Depay. Once we move into 2022 we wouldn’t have to target the likes of Aguero and Wijnaldum anymore as the club would be more financially stable.

VISCA BARCA!

You'd be lucky to get over 50m in today's market for Dembele. He's got too many issues that no one would be willing to gamble that much on him.

Not sure if Depay would suit the way Barcelona want to play. But a front 3 of Messi, Aguero and Depay does sound good on paper. The thing is Aguero is injured quite a lot.

Wijnaldum doesn't seem like the type of Midfielder Barcelona like but could add industry to it. Again, he's 30, like Aguero, 32, these would be short term teals to help tie over the gap until the finances are better.

Yeah that’s what I say in my article. They’d be good short term, pandemic signings that could do a job for 2 years or so. Once we have money again we don’t have to target these types of players.

Pandemic signings or panic signings !,I've seen a fair fit of Barca this season, and I hate to think what will happen if Messi gets injured or loses his appetite !

Wijnaldum and Aguero would be class I disagree and Depay could turn out to be an outrageous signing if he hits form. United shouldn’t have sold him, Ole would’ve really got the best from Memphis it’s just a shame he was a few years too late. I’d love Depay at OT too, he really is a class player.

Both over 30 so would be awful short sighted signings. Not the approach they need at all, they also need to get rid of koeman .

Koeman is building a much more accomplished side that aren’t as reliant on Messi anymore. Don’t get me wrong he’s the 🐐 but it’s not all Messi Messi Messi anymore with what Koeman is building. Now other players shine like Pedri, De Jong, Fati and Trincao

Yeah but in case you didn’t notice there’s a global pandemic, Barca are in debt and can’t sign long term targets for hundreds of millions.

Sigh.

How are Barcelona going to get £65m for a winger that never plays because he's injured all the time.

There's not even that many clubs left that can pay £65m, let alone ones you can see coming from a long way off.

Well you’re the one who mugged yourself off, questioning why I list only free transfers and making out like FCB have 250 million in the bank.
