Joe Gelhardt

I know this is a bit niche, but once again Gelhardt is MOTM for the U23's, he is so much better than most around him, his trickery and technical ability should have won the team a penalty and his harrowing of their keeper led to McKinstry's second. We looked a shadow of our former self in the second half.
He is making the 1st team bench now at least.
This is a quandary, far too good for the U23's and can do no more than he is doing to impress on the boss just how good he is without having minutes against a better class of opposition but the line up, up front for the first team seems set in stone.
I have no doubt that Gelhardt is the future face of the club and hope that he remains patient.
I would be looking to the end of the season, when we are safe, to give Gelhardt a start or two.
How would you plan to develop him?

I hear you, but folk are forgetting. They are in the 2nd tier of the youth leagues... Not in there with Liverpool under 23s, Man Utd under 23s etc.

The quality is not that high.

Also he is a striker... Meaning he comes in for Bamford, nope because Tyler does usually and Tyler has picked up form and is the same age I believe. So he is behind 2 players.

He is way down the pecking order and rightly so.

Kid broke into a championship club and is an England under 18, 17 and 16 International playing in the second division reserve league.

He is always going ro look good in that situation.

I don't doubt he has a number of players in front of him for the reasons given above but I think the kid has something about him. I think that berth on the subs bench at some point might allow him to come on late in a game and I wouldn't be surprised if he made an impact.

He has a good physique, puts himself about and a good finisher. The key is to show those same attributes if and when he gets the chance.

So giving him that chance to be in and around the first team match day squad, giving minutes where it is possible and then a really productive pre season in the summer are how I would see the best things for his development.

Roberts is 22, gelhardt is 18

The step up from 23s which is kids football still to first team is massive. The pace and physicality are worlds apart. Some can handle it some can’t. Some adjust quicker than others. Gelhardt has championship experience and clearly has talent so he has a chance. I wonder from his attributes whether he’ll become a 10.

I think he’ll continue to make the bench and likely get some minutes for experience when we’re either out of sight or getting stuffed in a game - so he might not have to wait too long.

Gelhardt looks promising, but personally not sure he is ready yet. Whenever I have watched him (probably not as much as you Els) I am impressed with his technical attributes, but his decision making is still a bit off for me.

He will learn from being a part of the first team squad, and am sure his time will come, but not convinced I'd fast track him into the starting team.
