Wenger vs Ferguson

I wish Wenger had taken a book out of Fergie's books. I hate to admit it but the Man Utd manager had something Wenger did not. He had the ability to remained himself and adjust with the times. I may be biased but I think Arsenal under Wenger at times played phenomenal football.

However, Arsene could not adopt to the changing times. Ferguson had multiple assistants to bring in fresh ideas - and they were allowed to do so. Wenger did not. I remember Bould when he first came in...there was a noticeable tightening up in defense but it did not last. Bould eventually would sit on the bench and offer nothing game after game. There are people who state Wenger was a micromanager. He did not take on ideas other than from himself (after Dean left) and this eventually was his downfall. Fans could see the glaring issues in the team that were not fixed season after season. I often wonder how much more success would Wenger have had if he could at times plan a game based on his opponents (more consistently that is). Sacrifice the attacking play for a more disciplined approach against the big teams.

In many ways, I look at Klopp and I think he has the same problem. He can only play one way and if he has the right players. Granted, we are yet to see how he will react next season. Pep has shown he can adopt. There is still possession and pressing but he has also tightened up Man City's defense. Like Ferguson, he licked his wounds and came out better. If Wenger was able to adjust and reinvent himself, I wonder if he would still have been at the helm today. I certainly think he would have won the league more.

What about when Klopp came to Liverpool, with heavy metal football, seeing it resulted in way too many goals conceded, lost finals etc and then adopted to a more possession based game without the heavy metal, tightened up the defence, resulting in winning the CL, then the PL?

Does that not count?

I think he very much still plays similar football with maybe not as high a press. He has to be on the frontfoot...I dont think Liverpool know how to play any other way. Granted I don't watch them week in week out and most teams in the prem are not up to their level and so they will play on that front foot.

Wenger definitely could’ve done so much better post 2010 IMO. Up until that point, he done very well, couldn’t really argue, only had he won in Paris in on 06...
But the last 8 years or so, something should’ve happened. Because of the need to cling on, we are now in this awful mess.

Agreed OP, espescially in his latter years he seemed to get frustrated with a lot of aspects of modern football and became dertermined to do things his way instead of adapting to the way the game changed.

Wenger was hypnotized by Ferguson.
Thats how he persuaded him to sell him RVP

Might have meant Tony Book that played for City. He was a brilliant player, but probably to old for Arsenal at that point.

Klopp has adapted a lot at Liverpool. They’re just burnt out more than anything.

Not sure if it's burnout, although this could have contributed, added to the more congested fixture list. Injuries have certainly taken their toll, with the latest rumour that Henderson is now out for the season also.

Stealing books is wrong. Someone stole one from Ronald Reagan's library once and he hadn't even finished colouring it. Cruel!
