Best modern day goalie?

By modern I mean since the emphasis on GK’s being able to play with the ball at their feet. Since Victor Valdez and his brilliant Barca team, the trend has taken off.

Whilst I never really thought of Valdez as a great goalie, his ability on the ball is really amongst the best for his position in history. Without him, Barca would’ve found it incredibly difficult to play the way they did. Since then better goalies with just as good if not better ball playing abilities emerged. Top one is Neuer this past decade. Edison is another who has been excellent in recent seasons.

There have also been some goalies who have been found out with their poor to average ball playing abilities despite actually been very good goalies. De Gea and Cech are main ones I can think of.

This is actually one of the better things that has occurred in football this century.

Stop goals thats your job as roy keane says, not start counters or pass 50yards, oblak is the best in the world and he doesnt f@nny about with trying to tika taka it

That's a difficult one. Valdez had an awful save ratio, let in far too many goals for the amount of shots faced. I think if you are talking keeper - distributor, Ederson is the best in the premier league. But as a keeper, I don't think he's as good as say Oblak. Ter Stegen is also a very good keeper but has the bad luck of being behind possibly the worst Barcelona team for a generation. Donnarumma is one who is very highly rated from the next generation and of course, Neuer is on his way out.

I don't think there are any great great keepers at present. The last one was Buffon and Casillas was fabulous for about 8 years. Cech was also a wonderful keeper until his injury. Many have promised - De Gea, Courtois, lloris - but they fall short. Others like Pope or Gulacsi play for unfashionable teams and get no mention.

Neuer has had plenty of mad moments, kinda like Alisson but makes more wow saves.

The best keeper in the game is Oblak. Hands down, best sweeper keeper is Neuer and the best purely on the ground Ederson.

I'd agree with this. Neuer does make more wow saves, Alisson probably makes "more important" saves if you judge that within the context of a game such as the Barcelona SF.

But I would agree Oblak is the best goalkeeper in the world right now.

Alison isn’t great on the ball bar his long range distribution. Gotta be ederson in the pl. don’t want much overseas footy so can’t comment

disagree, he is and has been great, hes in some awful form with it atm though and was always capable of some brain farts but then again every keeper who takes as many risks will be.

Edersons been far more consistent with it and probably is better on the ball, more natural and nimble figure. Alisson if you watch penaltys is a unit not the most agile and can look stiff on the ball because of it.

Neuer before injuries was the leading gk for me in this department.

Oblaks brilliant but be interesting to see how he does in a different system, same with Pope of Burnley. Think theyre both well protected by their managers systems and teams, if some of thats taken away and theyre given more responsibilities on the ball or off their line etc.

Probably the OG and one of the best 'footballing' goalies is Van der Sar. Cool as ice, organised his defense and knew when to quick throw/kick it and when to stop play and give his defense a breather. All that while stil dominating the box and playing it safe. Neuer while spectaculair is basically a Fabian Barthez with a much higher skill floor (not good for the trainer's heart, but I like it as a neutral :D)
I also don't agree that the modern keeper's job description is just stopping goals. You are the only player who has the whole game in front of you, so you should use those valuable insights to benefit your team both in defense (coaching) and offense (long passes, quick resume of play).
Besides, if you played in a pub league yourself, you hated that goalie that just lumped the ball forward and lost possession for the team every time. Imagine that and the opposition is Barca or City... Gl ball watching and chasing...
