VAR and the Ref

VAR sending Paul Tierney to look at the monitor himself was such a joke...

"Go have a look Paul, his hands are up but we're not sure, it might be his arm's natural position"

Are you referring to a different game? Because there was nothing subjective about the handball that I'm referring to.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course there was.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So you're saying that could have been interpreted as not being handball?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I would have given handball but yes it could have been. I've seen it this season. Handball decisions have been the most inconsistent thing this season and guidance appears to have changed a couple of times.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I know the type of debatable handballs you are talking about e.g hands not all up in the air, ball fired from too close etc. But this wasn't one of those, not even the most inept ref could see it on a replay and think 'nah not handball'

Yes but he could have thought different and therefore when he was told he may have made a mistake, he goes to the screen, changes his mind and gives the penalty. The whole point of VAR followed and subsequently the right decision made. Job done.

TOOR you are having a mare here.

In every single season I can remember stretching back over 20 years, regardless of the competition or country, regardless of what bizarre rule is being used, that is a clear handball every single time. Nothing subjective about it whatsoever.

You could argue that if he "made his body unnaturally bigger" is subjective and reason enough to refer back to the ref.
However, it is pretty black and white as to whether the arm is above the shoulder level or not. VAR should be able to conclusively award a penalty here on that basis without needing to send the ref to the monitor

TOOR is right about one thing though. Of all the crap we've seen from VAR since its introduction, this particular case probably isn't one worth giving too much thought, especially as we ended up with the correct decision.

Exactly I'm not sure how anyone could think that was subjective

Yep pretty ridiculous that they even asked him to go have a look. But thankfully he rightly pointed to the spot.

They changed how VAR works. The refs are now meant to go and look at it themselves rather than VAR just tell them. Sending him over to watch it himself is the correct protocol as it currently stands.
