Thoughts?

Where did you get this ridiculous figure from?Referees are actually quite poorly paid, to the extent that a lot of them have a second job. Howard Webb was a policeman as well as a referee.

I once got booked by Howard Webb. That's the closest I come to a celebrity anecdote.

Apparently PL referees are highly trained and being paid 180K a year, but you wouldn`t think so with the amount of mistakes / wrong decisions they are making.

They should be made to come out and explain themselves after games, and fined when they make ridiculous decisions.

Most of all, they need to grow some balls and stop being so fearful of the shiete storm that follows making decisions that go against the media`s favourite clubs.

All the fans want, is common sense applied, the rules administered correctly, totally impartial officiating and no benefit of doubt handed down to players from certain clubs.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I get what you're saying but I also think it's way easier said than done. It's going to play on their mind, they are simply people and you can say they are paid well all you like but the reality is they will be prone to mistakes, poor judgement and still have regular human feelings when it comes to things like not wanting to be a hate figure in public etc.

I think it's easy to forget that this is ultimately just a sport and these are human beings, not robots. People are fallible, get annoyed by it all you want but it won't change that fact.

Or maybe, players. Players come out with some complete bs most of the times. Let referees referee and blame the players when things don't go to plan. United are a negative team, who are doing well by being hard to beat. Spurs are team doing things in the complete opposite way they have been doing for years. That is the problem ... not the referees.

Refs would love that. Would really make them the star of the show. Look how a mic helped welsh Rugby ref Nigel Owens become an internet sensation

'Internet sensation' is one of those word pairs that just go together, like 'avid reader' and 'relegation dogfight'.

well there must be a clever word/phrase in the dictionary that describes such a coupling of words...

He's great.

Unfortunately I can't ever see football players and referees being like that.

Rugby players aren't feigning injury / diving every 20 seconds, trying to con referees.

It doesnt help that the rules have changed about 20 times in two years either and that our officials are inconsistent with their decisions on a game by game basis.

Football has gotten worse since the introduction of VAR.
Decisions have also gotten worse.

I think the whole referee system needs a rework from the ground up, new employees, new rules for the refs to follow, mic them up like the OP said and how rugby have it, players to be told to respect referees or they're off the team, diving or any attempt at cheating is an instant yellow card.

Football needs to go back to how it was, not how it is now where the slightest touch in the box gets you a penalty.

The game truly is pathetic nowadays.

++

Rugby players constantly and consciously make cynical fouls when they are under pressure defensively, both for respite and to stop the oppo pushing over their line They just hope the ref doesn't see it or give it. Its a frustrating part of the game and the ref has to have eyes in the back of the their heads at all times. So they, just like footballers, are trying to 'con the refs'. One thing a rugby ref does have is a penalty try when it gets ridiculous. Maybe in football refs should be able to award a penalty goal when it becomes too obvious/
