Accidental Handball Rule Change

Whilst I am sure we all welcome this common sense change in the rules regarding "accidental" handball, isn't it typical of the media to strongly imply this rule has come about because of the Spurs "non" goal goal at Fulham on Thursday.

Once again, an opportunity seized upon by our wonderful friends to devalue Spurs in some way or another. Most of the reporting either implied Spurs seem to be the only team to have benefited or have cheated a victory in some way, due to the stupid rules.

They seem to have conveniently failed to mention all the other handball decisions seen over the last couple of years that have benefited and gone against countless teams, including the one that cost Spurs the small matter of an opportunity of winning a Champions League Final. A dream destroyed within a minute of kick off for the very same reason.

Still whilst I don't expect the agenda to stop any time soon, at least one of the most ridiculous rules of the game has been sorted.

That was handball. His arm was way out in an unnatural position, impeded the progress of the ball in the box.

As for ending the dream inside a minute, come on, you felt that Spurs couldn’t score as soon as that decision was given?

Its just one in a catalogue of ridiculous decisions regarding handball. Laminas was not a deliberate handball.

These are deliberate handballs

They changed the handball rule from a defensive point of view after our game against Newcastle earlier in the season and the ridiculous penalty given against Dier.

I do wonder why they are only doing this now, when we have benefitted from 2 handball decisions over the last couple of seasons against City, and they benefitted from one against us - although Aguero missed the penalty. It’s almost like the governing body are a bit of a shambles

Those are the ultimate taking one for the team, as these deny a goal bound opportunity in exchange for sending a player off, and no guarantee that the pen will lead to a goal either.

Handball should only be given if it is intentional, where the hand moves towards the ball or is intentionally placed in a position to block the path of the ball.

Recent examples involving Spurs, such as Dier v Newcastle, Doherty v Southampton and Sissoko in the CL final, are perfect examples of an unintentional handball that should never have been given as a penalty.

Somebody deliberately kicking the ball at an opponents out stretched arm from close range should not be given as handball.

Yeah ok, so everyone in a wall for a free kick can just stand with their arms raised before the ball is kicked and claim it was ball to hand.

If you read what I said, I said from close range.

I would not describe a free kick as close range, would you?

Sure so you determine the length of range then. Then ask the ref to ensure it is not 1mm beyond that.

Under the old rule no referee would have given yesterday's hand ball ruling.

Can someone remind me......why did we ever change the old handball rule where "intent" was a factor in the referee's decision to award an FK or penalty?
