Quirky/outdated Football Terminology

Tonight Villa "twice hit the woodwork" - all Premier League club goalframes are aluminium

Not interfering with play - I agree with Bill Shankly about that one

Injury time - is now more correctly termed "Time added on for stoppages" but the BBC website still uses it

Simulation - a dive

Square ball - if the ball is mis-shapen it should be changed

Professional foul - all PL/EFL players are professionals so how could it be anything else?

Anyone else got any?

These were from when I used to play alot 30yrs ago

The refs got his number- i never knew refs were carrying their mobiles

Stick it up 'em- I'll leave that to your own dirty imagination

Took him out- So they're dating, so what

Down the channel- Didnt know whether a ferry would be there or jeremy beadle with his microphone

Pass and move- No way sherlock. Just pass and standstill as the alternative

shake the refs hand- as if 90mins of doing his job was some sort of achievement

I've been asking for years where that 'woodwork' term comes from and why it's still used

Only English words allowed to be used in England. Anyway just going down to the café, might do a bit of al fresco dining.
