Extending Bailly’s Contract.

Ole’s confirmed we are in talks to extend his contract. When will we learn? We made this mistake with Phil Jones (one among many) and it looks like we’ll end up doing the same with his Ivorian brother.

A lot has been made the good work we’ve done ‘clearing out the deadwood’ since Ole came in, but we’ve still been making the same mistakes with contract extension and keeping around players that shouldn’t be at the club. It’s a club problem, so it’s not really something I think we can blame him for too much.

I guess the argument is that with finances looking to be stretched this summer due to the huge losses in revenue, keeping him rather than spending money on a replacement makes more sense. But there’s plenty of cb’s around we could replace him with that could stay fit, thus offering some value, even in the championship.

Decisions like this contribute to this perpetual ‘rebuild’ that we have been in for many years.

Showing a bit more fitness isn’t enough, he’s still be unavailable for a lot of the season. And it’s just repeating the same mistakes. Bailly doesn’t offer anything that a championship defender that can stay fit could, even finances really are a problem.

But even then, just facking him oft and signing a cb that can come into the team and start ahead of Lindelof would be a better decision. As things are, we rely on two cb’s across all competitions. Get another in and just rely on three.

The question remains though... How easy is it going to be to just sack someone off and get a good replacement in this particular window in this particular year of all years? That's the issue I think - addressing multiple areas of the squad might be very difficult in one window.

If we can get a good CB in the summer though, that would be great.

Phill Jones getting that extension shows just how useless Woodward n Judge are. Who in their right minds thought that was a good deal.

He's a poor player who spends 80% of the year injured.

This guy they have promoted this week is a uni mate of Woodward. Fletch obviously no experience. Nothing is changing. They have made some empty gesture to appease the fans but we can see right through it. Yet again they have refused to conclude that the club isnt working.

Won't win another PL until they are all gone.

Unfortunately, this is true.

I don’t think it would be all that difficult. As I say, we could probably look to the championship and find someone more reliable. Or not sign a replacement at all - I think it’s obvious we’ll be signing at least one cb this summer.

Yeah I reckon CB will be our priority this summer, irrelevant of whether Bailly gets an extension or not.

Technically both Liverpool and City have bought a CB from a Championship club this season, so the idea really isn’t that strange.

Liverpool, and apparently us, have been keeping an eye on Ben White as well. A player that started making waves in the championship. A lot of players have been coming up from that league and proving themselves capable in the prem for a good few years now - it’s one of the richest leagues in the world, the standard is a lot higher than it used to be - many of which have become England internationals.

Not that we have to sign championship players, but it does show that it’s a market that can be exploited if money is tight, and the right targets can be identified.

I remember reading an article about a year ago about how PL clubs are looking far more to the Championship than ever before because the quality has improved so much. Also mentioned Ligue 2 in France as a great place to look for talent.
