Book Review: Carraghers Greatest Games

As some of you probably already know, I am an avid reader of football books and autobiographies. I read Wenger's recently and started on Carragher's one about 8 weeks ago but due to time constraints only just finished it this evening. For those unaware, this is not a book about Carragher or his career directly, it is about what he perceives to be the greatest games of all time; unsurprisingly there are a few Liverpool games, but to his credit he includes the 1989 0-2 Arsenal match that decided the title.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone. It has a real tendency to get stuck in and provide superb tactical analysis as well as first hand reaction from those who played in the games or even managed them. It has star studded input from the likes of Xavi, Sheringham, Rooney, Klopp, Crespo, Beckham and Gary Neville to name just a few and you get a brilliant perspective of what players and manager really think when they win a UCL 2-1 in the last minutes of the match!

To give Carragher credit, he is really unbiased in his analysis and even says it's a myth that United didn't deserve to win the 1999 UCL final! That's a great chapter and brilliant to read as Carragher labels Beckham one of the best midfielders in the world and instrumental to our win at the Camp Nou. It's deliberately formulaic in terms of how he reviews each game and gets first hand accounts but well and truly worth the read.

Well no it's not a fact is it because it's not easy to win a league no matter what country you are in.

I have seen comments like this about Poch at PSG, it's simply not true and it's not that easy to win a league title no matter what country you're in.

He's taken Rangers to a different level, domestically and in Europe over the past couple of seasons, that's not easy to do.

Oh dear oh dear. Even the likes of McLeish and Walter Smith won the title at Rangers. It's not hard at all when Celtic are the only other above average side and every other team are full of Sunday league players.

Just because 2 clubs are far above the rest doesn't mean that it's easy to do. It's certainly not easy to reach the knockout stages of the EL for 2 seasons in a row when the SPL is one of the poorer leagues in Europe in general.

I suppose Klopp and Guardiola have an easy job then because Liverpool and Man City are both regarded to be the top 2 sides in the league, therefore it must be easy to win the league because one of them should only have the other to worry about. As proven this season, that's not the case. Football isn't played on paper.

Klopp and Pep are both extremely overrated, yes. The pair of them are cheque book men who just spend silly money to achieve success. Remember most LFC fans wanted Klopp gone, but then he spent daft money on VVD, Becker, Fabinho and Keita etc.

Why did you delete my comment?

Because you just make the same points again that you've already made so it's a waste of a comment

So in your eyes the only managers who succeed are the one's who do well with little to spend? What a ridiculous argument that is.

I didn't want Klopp gone before any of those signings as there was a clear progression in the side from basically the moment he walked into the job up until now.
