and what to make of him.
Clearly he has done some things very well, otherwise we wouldn't have been third last season and currently second this season. His intrduction and handling of youth players has also been good.
So far so uncontroversial.
When we look at the down side that is also usually agreed on, we are not good to watch, or not enough anyway.
So why and what to do about it.
The why is obvious, he wants to keep his job, and finishing in the top 4 will generally do the trick.
So he is unadventurous, concentrates too much on defensive formations, has players good enough to often get us the three points, without taking the risk of a more attacking formation.
I hope this is going to change next season without him having to go too much against his principles.
First, the crowds will be back, so for home games there will be 70odd thousand fans urging the players on, and letting them and Ole know when ther are not attacking enough.
The fans in the away games wont want their team to be defensive, so we have more chance of playing in the counter attacking style Ole likes. Also our away fans do us proud.
The second thing is that I hope our search for a right winger will be coming near an end, with Amad and Fecunda, not immediately or in every game, but gradually. I am a big believer in wingers, using the full width of the pitch regularly stretches the came. Wingers, think Giggs and Becks, score and assist as well as providing excitement.
It would help AWB develop, but mainly will make us better to watch.
We will have to be patient though for the two mentioned to become regulars.
Our manager

Signings - Bruno has been a great addition, but the rest of his signings haven't really improved us, and the handling of VDB has been a disaster.
Player development - Shaw has improved hugely under Ole, and Greenwood had a great season last year, but DDG, Maguire, Lindelof, AWB, Fred and Martial have dissappointed.
Achievements - Currently no trophies or title challenges, and we don't really look close to challenging for major honours any time soon.
Style - Some great results achieved against the best sides about, but generally, his cautious, nervous approach and over reliance on Bruno is dissapoitning.
In summary, I think Ole has done OK, but OK isn't good enough for United. The aim has to be pusbong City close for the title, and i just don't see Ole achieving that within the next 2 seasons.
Given this and the fact that every penny counts more than ever at United, id replace him this Summer.

Somebody who excels at at least 1 thing, whether that be a great style of play, great transfer business or a relentless habit of winning, maybe a cup specialist.

Any names?

Good article, wouldn't argue with any of it. I suppose the only question is whether Ole would have us playing better football with better players or if he's just inherently cautious. Whether we get the answer to that in the coming seasons depends largely on the signings we make and just as importantly, who we shift, which hasn't been a strong point for the club in many years.
As for this season, I've criticised the style of play at times, but even moreso the defensive minded substitutions when we have a lead to protect. But at the end of the day, he's delivered results that are as good as can be expected with the squad we have. So of course he should and will continue as manager, with that being the case. But when the likes of Mata and probably Lingard are given new contracts, as looks likely, it does hinder any building of something better

The only one of those I could choose would be Rodgers.
Allegri and Simone are at least as defensive as Ole, and Ancelotti isn't pulling up trees. So no to any of them for me. Rodgers hasn't proved himself better than Ole

You don't think Rodgers side plays better than Oles?
Simeone has won a league title, breaking the monopoly of Real and Barca.
Ancelotti is a winner.

Rodgers lost to Ole more than wins, despite having a better team on paper. Did you see the Leicester match against City this week? Ole would have been crucified playing like that.
Simeone’s football makes Mourinho team playing like Brazil in the 70s.
Ancellotti hasn’t done an ok job with Everton, but not as inpressive as getting this Man utd to 2nd place

Ole has the better of Pep head to head. Doesnt make him the better manager.
Simeone has done a great job at Athletico. Id accept his style of football if it resulted in a league title or 2.
Ancelotti would do great things with our current squad.

If we were to raid the Everton staff, I'd rather have Duncan Ferguson than Ancelotti.

Strangely I was thinking this earlier watching Everton, Big Dunc just in his shirt with the rain coming down for the tech area is everything that Old doesn’t have we start so many games seemingly totally unmotivated only to grind it out as the game goes on, I just can’t judge us at the moment and would Poch, Tuchel etc do better maybe not , Pep and Klopp certainly but we are not getting them I just wish Ole had a better back up coaching staff from Phelan down

I hundred percent agree with the coaching staff, especially Phelan. Kidd, McClaren and Queiroz were all better than him
