DPL v Burton A

The Albion of Burton revived under Floyd-Hassellbaink’s management, but form dipped a bit until a couple of games ago, but having beaten Portsmouth on Saturday, their impetus is back. Our impetus is thoroughly shrivelled up. Some blame the players, some blame the manager, some blame the ex-manager and I suggest that we should not leave the Talent Identification manager out of it either. With so many possible causes, there are probably a whole lot of things that need to be put right if we are to re-grasp the competitive nettle. As these are too numerous to even think about - and to do so would only make me more miserable - I won’t.

What I don’t understand is why people seem to think that it is no good replacing the manager at this stage. I would have thought that there is nothing to lose and everything to gain if they could get someone better, rather than risk further ignominy and emotional punishment for the fans. There would then at least be some hope of getting back into the play-offs whereas there is none under the present regime. I think the Board might well have been shamed into action if fans were present to voice their disgust and their absence should not be exploited.

I’ll guess the score will be 0-3.

Surely, in such a small industry , you could draw up a shortlist og 3 or 4 potential suitable managers, interview them and agree an appointment in about a week! Wake up!

the board will mess about till its to late for a new manager to sign his own players, then blame him for not having a decent pre-season or anything more than mid table, so it wont cost them much some things never change.

Tonights team. Shaky at the back, no threat up front.

Rovers 1-2 Burton
Okenabirhie to score.

So hope that I'm wrong😕

I thought Butts would start Richards after his goal. However, I had stopped watching before he came on and maybe the rest of his play was not good.
At their best, Smith and Bostock are my choice for the holding mid-fielders, but Bostock's play has been very variable since his injury. The two "kids" at full back have a chance to prove their worth, but I do not think of Greaves as a full back.
We are a little weak out wide up front, and hopefully Sims will be more like his early form. Okenabirhie is no winger, but possibly can add more than Lokilo or Simoes. Copps is better in the centre than out wide. May be Richards should have been out wide.

We could get a bit of a tonking tonight, or we could win, other results go for us and bang, back in the race. Can't see it though 4.1 to them, Copps for us 🤞

I cannot be as critical of this performance as of some. The young full backs played quite well and in the first half we saw a lot of hard work. Sims was almost anonymous, but there was a good deal of evidence of real application. Copps was good in the first half and the weakest link was probably Bostock. It is largely a case of a failure of skill, which has mysteriously disappeared. We seemed outclassed again rather than out-worked.

After the first half I thought one team would probably nick the game 1-0. Although the game was somewhat scrappy, I thought the Rovers played their best half for some time. No way did I see the collapse coming - with the chances we gave them, Burton should have scored more than 3. It was like AB had changed the whole squad at halftime.
I did not think Sims was almost anonymous in the first half as he showed flashes of the past in the way he got round defenders, but his finishing was mainly poor. What has gione wrong with Bostock? - just before his injury he was showing some good skills.
It will be interesting tomorrow to see who of the out-of-contract have signed, and who are looking for a higher division or higher pay, and of course who was not offered a contract.

I suppose I judge Sims by a higher standard than most and expect too much, but perhaps he illustrates the difference between the inspired manner in which the whole team played in 2020 which none of them seem able to replicate now.

I read that Moore is suffering from pneumonia following a period of isolation after testing positive for Covid, It would be topical to mention that Steve Cotterill, the Shrewsbury manager has missed 20 games because of Covid with two spells in hospital and will not be on the touchline for a while yet. Neither could be our favourite manager at the moment, but I hope both will recover. Being in charge of the football team must be one of the most stressful occupations at any time, but it is probably even more so in this current pandemic.

Only recently have vaccinations been on offer for the over 45s and football is a dangerous environment.
