Burnley at home

For some reason this fixture has haunted for the last 4 seasons.

Not only have we failed to beat them every time but we’ve amazingly never lead in any of the 4 games twice coming from 2 down to snatch a point.

I can’t remember any opposition team in my lifetime who have avoided defeat at OT 4 times in a row (there probably is though). I think we’ve beaten at Turf Moor every time.

We need to start fast tomorrow. I feel it’s one of those games where if we score 1st we’ll be quite comfortable but we’re not good at starting fast usually.

A win tomorrow equals our points tally of last season with 6 games remaining.

“We need to start fast tomorrow.”

Prepare to be disappointed

I’m hoping we see Pogba back in the double pivot alongside McT, but if Martial is out and Rashford isn’t ready I expect we’ll see him roaming again.

If that’s the case, I really want to see us back to 4-2-3-1 in the attacking transition, rather than the three at the back and Pogba inside that we saw first half on Thursday.

It’s far too easy to defend against, particularly for a team used to playing with a narrow, disciplined defensive block. It also hamstrings our threat down the left and makes it difficult for us to get back in shape for the defensive transition exposing us in the LB area.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’d start Donny either on the left interchanging with Bruno or put him in CM with Pogba on the left.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
If Pogba is in the left, he needs to be on the left.

Not isolating Shaw, tripping over Bruno, and making it easier for their midfield to shadow and limit access in central areas.

It worked alright last weekend.

He played wider last weekend than he did on Thursday. Last weekend was also a lot more open a game than we’ll get tomorrow.

The first half midweek was a mess, despite Granada being one of the worst teams we’ve faced this season. Pogba and Telles were miles apart, Telles lost the ball because Granada could isolate him and equally was exposed repeatedly when they attacked down the right (something they should have done all game). It was easier for the Granada forwards to block the passing lanes stopping us getting the ball to Bruno and making it more difficult to play out. When Pogba and Bruno did pick it up in central areas, it also made it easier for Granada to double up in pressing them because they could station three players in the same zone.

If we’re going to be successful against Burnley, we’re going to need to pull them into wide areas to create space centrally. We’re going to need to use the full width of the pitch. Shaw will need a player in front of him, as will AWB.

Don’t get me wrong: I’m not fundamentally opposed to playing Pogba on the left tomorrow, provided he really is playing on the left.

Of course I want us to win tomorrow.
But unlike anyone else on here, I love Burnley doing well.
A small EastLancs town working on a budget of £15 a week. Succeeding because of sheer bloody mind ess and playing to their strengths.
Loud, fanatical fans walking through the town to the Turf.
The other two Preston and Blackburn have sunk, so not tomorrow, but come on you Clarets against the rest.

I don’t mind them either. Dyche has done a fantastic job keeping them competitive year after year.

I'm torn between affection for the club (for the reasons you articulated and the fact I have an old friend from Clitheroe who is an avid fan) and an aversion to this particular team. Recent matches against them haven't been a gratifying experience. Even the victories have been soul destroying.

Clitheroe eh, I used to live near there and loved it. Spent many a happy hour wandering around Byrnes.

At least Ole is learning that bad decisions against Man Utd are a regular thing now. That is what SAF had to deal with and overcome. They shouldn’t have to but we all know refs hate Man Utd.
