Champions league reform

One thing that went unnoticed in the pallaver of the last few days is that 2 teams get free entry into the champions league if they fail to qualify on merit.

So this year the likes of liverpool would still qualify even if they missed out on the top four.

This is no different from the super league and shows that UEFA are just as bad as the rest.

UEFA created the desire for a super league, and with these reforms are only making the matter worse.

It's not great, and is definitely skewed, but it's infinitely better than the proposed alternative

Its still not right. If your not good enough on the park you dont deserve a backdoor entry.

Its the same crap with the teams dropping out of the champions league into the europa league. Its morally wrong. You get put out your out. simple.

All day yesterday it was about being "there on merit" from neville and co and now silence.

'Uefa need to stop pandering to these people to keep them in the tent'

BBC Breakfast

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish added that Uefa should change the qualification criteria for the European competitions, which favours traditionally 'bigger' clubs. Speaking on BBC Breakfast today, he said: "We have been living with this for as long as I’ve been involved in football, this constant threat that if we all don’t tow the line, if we don’t accept that their position in football needs to be gilded, needs to be special, then they would go off and do this. Let’s face it, this was an attempted coup to try to steal football.

"They still want to exert pressure on [Uefa president] Aleksander Ceferin. What Uefa need to do is start looking after the game and stop pandering to these people to keep them inside the tent because they are always going to be in the tent now, whatever happens.

"The Ajaxs and the Legia Warsaws should not be playing qualification tournaments in the summer, when they have won their league, in favour of an Arsenal or a Tottenham, who leapfrogged an Aston Villa or Leicester because it’s ‘better’ to get those teams in the Champions League for one year’s television revenue."

Think the notion of an almost completely closed shop is what people were up in arms about more than anything.

Was also the point that these clubs generate huge amounts of money for their domestic leagues, and if they left to join this, the domestic leagues would suffer as would grass roots.

At the centre of Uefas principles is the notion that European places are gained on merit....now ok, if teams don't finish in UCL places yet get in the back door there is an argument that it wasn't merited.....but they would have had to have done well in the UCL before to be picked as one of those "wild cards" so in a sense they've still merited it on some way.

That's not me defending it, I hate the idea that historical performance is rewarded in the here and now.....but at least Uefa will continue to keep sporting merit at the centre of everything they do

The super league lot didn't give a flying fck about that.

I totally agree mate

Just saying that Uefa will never go down a closed shop route...they will never commit to something that sees the same teams in each and every season.

Are they catering for and pandering to the big teams...absolutely....but they are not selling out completely.

My hope is that Uefa now wake up and stop pandering to these clubs any longer.

It is precisely because Uefa gave these teams so much power that they though they could overthrow the house....Uefa might now decide "do you know what, fck ye's!"

I just find it funny the outrage from sky and bt on the super league but are silent on this crap.

Ill be honest if it goes ahead im done with the champions league not that i watch it much anyway. This is as bad as boxing now with its fixed fights and stupid ranking system.

What next the top 8 seeds join the competition at the quarter final stage.
