The Red Card

Should it have been given or not?

At first I tended to side with Kennedy when he said the first one wasn’t a yellow, I kind of felt the same about both McGregor and Simpsons first yellows, so sort of understood where he was coming from.

However, having watched the highlights a couple of times, it’s blatantly obvious that McGregor caught both players on the leg above the ankle and didn’t play the ball on either occasion.....yellows for that sort of challenge are always justifiable in my view.

Then there was this argument about the rule change, and because we scored, the second booking shouldn’t have been given. My understanding of the new rule is that a second booking should not be given if the reason for that booking was due to a deliberate attempt to stop a clear goal scoring opportunity, only for a goal to be scored regardless....that’s not what happened yesterday.

McGregor made a poor challenge on a player 20-30 yards from goal, with a multitude of Celtic defenders between said player and the goal, so that challenge did not prevent a clear goal scoring opportunity, Rangers created that opportunity after that event, hence why the second yellow, for me, was justified.

As said at the start, I kind of agreed with Kennedy at first, but on further reflection, I think he has criticised the referee a bit harshly

Thoughts?

I know its long gone but why did Aribo not get red carded when giving away the penalty during the cup tie?
Surely if it was deemed a penalty and denying the striker a goal scoring chance he should have walked ,Britton went earlier in the season for taking out Morelos 40 yards from goal ,

They introduced a double jeopardy rule where, if you are genuinely trying to play the ball, you don't get sent off when giving away a penalty even if you are 'last man'.

Never made any attempt to play the ball just pushed Griffiths who went down like the titanic admittedly but still not a genuine attempt to play any ball in the area so had to be a red card .

It wasnt a clear goalscoring opportunity, nor was it a foul worthy of a yellow either.

At no point did Griffiths have control of the ball and it was not guaranteed that he was going to get control either, the ball could easily have drifted behind Griffiths even if Aribo hadn't touched him, so how can you say he was denied a clear goal scoring opportunity?

The ball took a deflection and was bouncing towards the two of them, Aribo was a bit over zealous in his attempts to use his body weight to shield the ball from Griffiths and gave him a bit of a push....a foul was given and a penalty awarded because it was in the box...all correct decisions

A shove doesn't automatically equate to a yellow card, if that was the case, yellow cards would constantly be getting dished out every time someone got pushed in the box when a delivery from a free kick/corner came in.
