Top tier players aren’t coming to United right now. We need to prove that we are winners again before we can cherry pick the cream of the crop.

Like it or not, we don’t have the same aura as Madrid. We would be a sideways step for Mbappe and Haaland.

City on the other hand...

We need to work harder to identify and acquire those world class players before they have blossomed beyond all doubt. Mbappe from PSG is pretty impossible; Mbappe from Monaco might have been doable, and definitely before his breakthrough season.

From that point of view, catching up with the success rate of the recruitment operations of teams like Leicester would be as important as any signing. Hopefully Murtough is moving things in the right direction.

Martial may have been too busy sulking about shirt numbers to learn from Zlatan. But in general I don't see how you can tell whether players learned from him, nor why you'd conclude that if they didn't in that instance, mentoring by older players is never valuable. There are lots of examples of great players talking about the importance that training beside and learning from established greats in their formative years, e.g. the influence Cantona had on the Fledglings. The extent of the impact Cavani has on Greenwood depends a lot on the two individuals: how generous Cavani is with his knowledge, how much Greenwood is able to soak up. But if he aspires to develop as a number 9, there aren't many senior players who provide a better example of movement off the ball.

I am not denying that it is important. I just think we place too much emphasis on this. The days of Cantona and today we cannot compare. If anything, I am still against that Zlatan move because it was short term fix for Mourinho, and to a degree it can be argued it halted the development of Martial and Rashford.

If it serves Greenwood fantastic! In recent years, I reiterate, I am not sure what bringing in the likes of Falcao and Zlatan have done for these youngsters because I have not seen it.

Fair points scholay. I wouldn't want to argue that buying old players is justified for mentorship value per se. We had no idea how Cavani would perform this season but it didn't look like a huge risk because he was supplementing an attack that had been flying in the second half of the previous season. (Actually, he has proven a lot more important than we may have anticipated.) With Zlatan we were buying a declining player to be the main man. It's more problematic buying for the short term in that context.

Another thing is that most of us reminisce about that season without much fondness, and that reflects the general functionalism of Mourinho football and the wider incoherence of decision making at the club. Maybe we'd think of Zlatan's spell with more affection if his swansong had been under Fergie (or Solskjaer).

I don't think anyone would say we're in pole position. But sometimes the timing is right (time to leave, and other suitors aren't bidding for whatever reason), the fit is right (Torres chose Benitez's Liverpool when there were better clubs interested in him), or the money is right. I very much doubt we're bidding for either of those players this summer. However, if United felt Haaland fit their tactical requirements more than any of the other leading teams did and needed to spend big to close the gap on our rivals, if we were therefore offering a higher salary than anyone else, and if his relationship with Solskjaer convinces him he'd be at home at Old Trafford, I don't see why that transfer would be unthinkable.

I suppose anything is possible if we're willing to give Haaland more than the £600k a week that he's rumoured to want. The real question is, would we want to invite Tony from Lady & the Tramp to have even more influence over our club?

These players have very limited options because of their price tag and wage demands, so it comes down to timing, demands and sporting ambition.

Clubs that want him - Maybe 20.
Clubs that can afford him - Realistically, 6 clubs.
Clubs that need him over other signings. Maybe 3

Then from those 3 clubs, the player has to consider the following -

Who is the manager and for how long?
Impact player could have on teams objectives?
Tactical suitability ?
Teammates ?

Yeah Haaland could go to Bayern or Juve and hoover up League titles like they do already, or go to Spain and score tons of goals per season but not as many as Messi or Ronaldo did. Or maybe he could go to United and shoot them to their first league title in 8 or 9 years.

I know which of those achievements would be deemed greater.
